I havent purchased Oblivion yet (I wanna get some more RAM first) but what are some good PC games like it in the real-time RPg genre?

also, how good is Oblivion if you havent played earlier installments of the series?

Oblivion is a good game and worth getting. 25,087 gamespot users voted Oblivion a 9.3 which should tell you it's worth trying, versus the few negative comments you are bound to read in this thread about it. There is some valid criticism about the leveling system and less complicated character development -but that needs to be put in context in an otherwise great game. The odds are if you haven't played the earlier ones in the series you will enjoy it.

Gothic 1 and 2 are excellent games. As long as you dont mind outdated graphics and taking 30min to get the controls mastered. I personally like these 2 more than the Elder Scrolls games.

You dont need to play the previous games in the series to enjoy Oblivion. Although I've seen Morrowind packaged with the 2 expansions for $15 at Walmart.

Oblivion is not good. It is a mediocre game that suffers from many flaws and problems. Without heavy modding it isn't even worth playing. Unless you want to invest a lot of time in modding the game I suggest you avoid it and get The Witcher, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or one of the other many great PC role-playing games.

Morrowind is cheaper, better, and probably will run on your system.

Oblivion

Pros:

Good graphics

Vast area to explore

Lots of quests to do

combat is easy to learn

Cons:

Quests are repetitive and get boring quick

The npcs all sound the same

combat is rather dull

you have to micromanage stats to make sure you dont get ez'd later in the game

all races are the same height for some reason

not much else to do besides loot and quest

leveling is often more a chore than fun

story is utter crap

character development is weak but not crap

story is cliched

Final Comment: It's a good game if you like free roam and thats it, as an rpg is fails to live up to the good story and character development standards..

You could always go outside and run around a park aimlessly for 100 hours

Whiteblade999

One of the reasons I have played, and loved Morrowind to death (plus Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions). But, I have yet to buy Oblivion.

Oblivion is a really good game. It's like the best RPG there is. It's pretty gory and bloody and mostly violent. If you want a different game try Dungeon Lords. I heard it's a good game.
