Wait for the new GPUs?

My 1070 ti is coming in soon but I'm not sure if I should return it or keep it. Rumors suggest that the new cards will be out by July the only issue is I don't know the prices. I hear the 1170 will be as much as $600 MSRP.

It all depends on what your using now or you require the new gpu. If your getting a sizable upgrade from whatever you currently have I would hang on to the 1070ti, the rumor is the new cards are going only a tier step with performance brackets vs 2 step from pascal was. 1180 ~ gtx 1080ti , 1170~ GTX 1080 etc. 1100 series is going to a filler for 2018 and early to mid 2019.....also you can bet that getting your hands on 1180 or 1170 on release and a few months afterward will be hard and pricey( inflated prices)

12nm isnt going to give sizable gains like we seen with 28nm to 16nm with pascal.... when 7nm node hits in 2019 we can expect proper generational jump in performance with the next set of gpus. AMD is not giving Nvidia any real competition, I wouldn't be surprised if Turing is nothing more than a modified Pascal with GDDR6 on 12nm node.

I see. Right now I have a 970 and the 1070 ti i got from Nvidia for $450. Also, my current build is from a few years ago anyway...I have a i5 4570 Haswell so I guess that would be a massive bottleneck. Can't afford to upgrade everything right now.

Its not a massive bottleneck, but as long as the games you play only really need 4 threads you will be ok. Also one way to move the bottleneck away from cpu... if you do encounter it a certain game is to increase your resolution. So if you have say a 1080p screen you can use DSR to bump it up to 1440p etc and then cpu can feed the gpu better.

I'm tempted by the 1070ti or a 1080 to upgrade my 970.

However I only game at 1080p (that's all I have I use main TV ) so it's probably not worth it yet, but I still might.

@lifelessablaze: keep it, then you can upgrade to a better cpu later, besides this bitcoin biz looks like its here to stay this time so who knows what gpu prices will be in few months from now.

I upgraded from a GTX 970 and still using 1080p. Some games the difference is quite noticeable from vram and or massive difference in power , the extra power allows a solid 60 fps+ when 970 sometimes cant keep it. 970 is still a good gpu, you may have to lower a few settings. A 1070ti or 1080 is like a 2x upgrade.

i too and am thinking of getting a new gpu even i only had a gtx 1060 for two years unless the price is too high

Step 1: Get a EVGA GTX 1070 Ti

Step 2: Enroll in Step Up Program

Step 3: Pray GTX 1180 comes out in less than 90 days after your 1070 Ti purchase

if the GPU you ordered isn’t EVGA, id probably return it and get an EVGA GPU. Unless you don’t live in the U.S. since the step up program only works here

Using 980Ti sli myself and waiting for next gen. I really want improved performance with a single card with less than half the heat created.

When 7nm starts in 2019 that will be the time to upgrade from those 980ti's. 16nm to 12nm isnt a big upgrade 28nm to 16nm was huge, and 16nm to 7nm will be as well. I believe 1100 series is a fill in where they throw something out that looks new and they can promote their new GPP.
