Vega 64 for long-term 1080p-1440p?

@xantufrog I am in the same boat. Have a GTX 980 and starting to experience some slowdown on occasion (AC: Odyssey, for example). The card is, after all, now TWO generations behind haha. Would like to go to "2K" in the next year or so. I have no interest in ray tracing and so forth, not yet.

Curious to hear some answers, and was actually thinking of doing a "mid-gen" upgrade with a 1080 but they're still expensive new (haven't checked out new) and I would sooner spend 1000 on a new card than 800 on an older one. The compromise to this would be spending far less on a card that is "good enough".

The Radeon VII thread had some benchmarks on it with all the recent cards listed that was interesting, and at another site I was impressed with how well the card performs at 2K high settings.

*Bonus: AMD is giving out three free games (Division 2, Devil May Cry 5, and Resident Evil 2) with card purchases. Not that I'd buy a card just for that, but it's a nice incentive.

I had one of those nice limited edition metal cased ones, gets my vote.

in portugal brand new vega 56 8gb spahire pulse is 320€ with 3 games included. is it worth it?

it's a good card for that price, navi might be still quite a while and dont think there's going to be other 7nm gpu releases from amd before that so...

Worth it for the games, but otherwise 2060 is better choice for the price (half the TDP, so less heat and noise).

Thanks folks. The 2060 is definitely an option - but I am really pissed off at Nvidia these days, so call it petty but I would be ok spending more for less (as long as the less is enough) from AMD next round. I know it's not "smart" shopping, but it's kind of a hippie "I buy my bread from the co-op" thing I'm digging in on this round

Microsoft's DirectML unifies rapid pack maths API access, hence it would benefit Vega 56/64 in the longer term.

Turing GPUs has working rapid pack maths.

Thanks again everyone - I actually stumbled on a sealed MSI Vega 64 OC on eBay from a small electronics store for $360. Pulled the trigger - that's about what I paid for my 970 "way back when"

Smart move, I heard Navi / RX3000 series ain't coming till the end of this year, so they might be not relevant when Nvidia will fight with their RTX3000 series.

@howmakewood: eh, wouldn't matter much to me either way - i'd likely get very similar performance for the same price; possibly at a lower power draw but nothing to write home about I imagine. It should arrive tonight; I like MSI, I'm sure I'll love the card
