Good evening gentlemen.

An anonymous donor wishes to upgrade their system to improve the performance of Planetside 2: The Video Game!

Currently, they can run it on low settings with the following specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz

6 GB RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2

What would they have to upgrade to do this?

Some suggestions on a new video card would help.

Thanks gang!!

Probably time for a full upgrade. 3570k, z77 motherboard, and video card depends on how much you want to spend.

Hey, this is the person in question. I've only got like $200 to spare so a full upgrade is out of the question. I'd like to know which out of GPU or CPU would give me the best boost in performance. I'm fairly out of the loop when it comes to computer hardware. If anyone could suggest cheaper alternatives to throwing down 200 dollars on one of these things so I could upgrade both that would be helpful as well. Oh yeah, I'm also talking American dollars here.

either overclock the cpu to 3GHz+ or try to find something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NICE-Intel-Core-2-Quad-Core-Extreme-Edition-3-0Ghz-QX6850-CPU-Processor-LGA775-/190775890837?pt=CPUs&hash=item2c6b211395

get a decent used cpu from ebay like C2Q Q9650 & if you expand your budget a little more get a geforce GTX 550-560 or Raden HD 6850-6870 card if you can afford it as above stated this game is CPU intensive so CPU upgrade should be top priority because your current CPU is kinda slow for that game

What model motherboard and power supply does it have? Your best bet would likely be to upgrade the CPU cooler, overclock it, and get a new videocard...

Q9650 ends up costing more than i5 3570k.

and still have low fps cause the game is CPU bound.... upgrading his gpu is barely going to achieve anything as noticeably as faster cpu cycles.

it will when amd drops support for all dual gpu's piror to dx11 (hd 5970 and 5870x2). the 4800x2, 3800x2 series cards just flatout dont work with alot of games anymore. or did u not know that?

Does it? It can't be that bad, it feels like I never get less than 60 FPS in that game with settings maxed with an i7 930 and GTX 670. I'm sure the OP could run the game on decently high settings if he was willing to overclock that CPU and pop in a new GPU. What kind of budget are we working with here?

Sure about that? Like I said, I haven't seen it dip under 60 ever since I started playing, no matter what's going on onscreen. Looking at benchmarks, I'm led to believe it heavily favors NVIDIA cards.

PS2 a comprably above-average looking game gets 45 FPS on a 7950 LOL yeah right.

Besides the games not THAT good.

Yeah, game runs like crap. I ran it with GTX 690 and it was still dropping frames. 1080 max settings.

On an i5-2500K overclocked to 4.6 GHz? Even that kind of CPU isn't enough for PlanetSide 2 if you want 60 FPS at all times? Damn, Haswell can't come soon enough. My Q6600 at 3.0 GHz can't even maintain 20 FPS in the densest firefights, and that's one of the reasons I'm feeling the upgrade itch more than ever. But this system still performs reasonably well with most other games...

the game was also optimized by a consolite who thinks 30fps is wicked sick

Yup still not enough. I think that game doesn't use the cores on the CPU correctly. I heard it only uses 2 cores correctly.

Also heard that there will be a huge optimization patch sometime in Jan.

It's not far off from 1080p (cards with >1.5GB VRAM wouldn't see much of a hit from 1680x1050), and an old build suggests that the FPS is likely increased from what we see here. I'm not sure why everyone else here is having such a hard time running this game. Not sure what kind of battles people must be getting into to get such FPS drops. Irregardless, 30 FPS in a large battle isn't much to cry about, considering how large some of the battles can get in that game.

When you used to 60 fps all the time, 30 fps sucks. Plus its annoying how it goes from 100% usage with no battles to 50% in battles for my gpu
