You also have 8 cores and 6 cores, with different cpu speeds

IT does break the bank though :)

Sorry, not supposed to be a boast thread (the gif was just for fun).

I'm more talking about the stale nature of CPU architecture in general. These tiny little incremental updates to CPU power/speed is just dull. I want it more like the old days.

@evildead6789 Those CPU's you mention are not really worth the extra £'s/$'s for the average enthusiast.

I realise that lithography is holding us back slightly but I can't help feeling that Intel/AMD are milking it.

I could buy a 4770K, 3960K even that Xeon etc... but It's not really worth the lay out for the extra performance gained.

Software/game company's too still making games/programs that are single threaded, what's that about?

Come on people it's 2014!

From your specs, I wouldn't upgrade anything, maybe a new case, some custom stickers to add to your case, maybe some color braided wire sleeves, new mouse or keyboard?

4k monitor maybe? you've got the GPUs to game on it =)

The only sensible upgrade for you is 3930K on the 2011 X79 platform, however that is not worth it imo, as 2011-3 X99 is probably released this year and will give you "tons" of new features. X79 is already a few years old. You could upgrade to 8-16GB 2333RAM, but that won't make much difference.

How about SSD in raid or PCI-E SSD for increased speed?

Now this is another good upgrade along the 4k monitor I suggested.

I already have a nice SSD and yeah the X79 is too old. The logical step would be X99 but if they make it DDR4 only that's going to be very pricey.

I could move my PSU up to the top and stick another 780 in there but again would not be worth the money for the teeny gain. Plus my third PCI slot would only be 4x :(.

I'll wait. I just get this unnecessary urge now and again.

I guess some people get it with cigarettes, some get it with cars, some get it with women.

@kraken2109: Not too bothered about a sound system as I usually use headphones (AD700's). I still love my Korean Panel.

@horgen: I knew that.

My PC hardware is probably the least expensive aspect of my setup, because I bought a computer that can max all the games I like to play a couple years ago. Nothing to spend money on? It's in your head. Even if you enjoy them, your AD700's are relatively low end in the sound department - definitely worth upgrading. If you appreciate sound and like music, I'd recommend spending $300+ and get some really worthwhile headphones (and $100+ on an amp+dac combo). Spending $1,000+ on a computer only to spend $100 on sound feels really silly to me. In my mind, there's little difference between using lower quality A/V hardware and playing games with your graphics on "Low". If you appreciate a high-quality picture or hi-fi sound (if you like "High" graphics settings in your games, then I wouldn't see why not), then you could always use better A/V components to better appreciate content. This stuff is more expensive than PC hardware.

Other things worth considering:

- New Mouse/KB
- New Chair
- SSD (if you don't already have one)

@kraken2109: I have actually considered it but the thing that puts me off is that it's very early in 4K life and a bit soon to hop on board. As the screens will get much better over the next 2 years. (Then 8K will be out :D)

@KHAndAnime: I've never been much of an audiophile and I thought my headphones were quite good. They were a lot more than I'd normally spend on that sort of thing. But maybe you're right, maybe I need a different tower with more room to fit a decent sound card and some even better headphones. Something to mull over I guess.

@evildead6789: I don't think it would matter if you had a 32 core CPU running at 10GHz DayZ would still not run great. It's all down to the engine.

@klunt_bumskrint: Have you thought about spending the money on a really nice cooling system? A custom water loop, or maybe even a phase change setup to freeze your hardware? Or, what kind of receiver are you using? Some custom 3-way or 4-way surrounds with 10" or bigger subs in each would be nice...

Phasecooling on the CPU.. Though it will take 5 minutes or so to power up every morning.
