I am running Ubuntu 8.10 in VirtualBox on Windows XP. I can't get Ubuntu to recognize my ati radeon 3870. The driver for it will not install. However, when I boot Ubuntu from the hard drive, it sees my 3870 and installs the drivers. How can I solve this problem?

I am pretty sure u can't run 3d in a virtual machine, so the install is blocked with some generic driver.

A virtual machine does not use the host PC's video card. It has its own virtual video card, whose drivers are incuded with the Guest Additions install.
