"Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 has been released exactly 4 months ago and until last week a lot of users suffered from copy protection related problems. To fix those problems, Ubisoft opted to release a copy-protection-removing patch for the game.

This is a bit unusual (especially with Ubisoft's history of restrictive copy right usage) but is it newsworthy? Only if it turns out that Ubisoft used an illegal no-cd crack written by famous cracking group, RELOADED, as a fix for their own game.

The file in question was released by Ubisoft as a fix for the Direct2Drive version of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. When the file is checked using a hex editor, RELOADED's signature is clearly visible in the file's header.

Ubisoft has since pulled off the file and said that " the matter is being thoroughly investigated by senior tech support managers". Ubisoft UK Community Manager added that "Needless to say we do not support or condone copy protection circumvention methods like this and this particular incident is in direct conflict with Ubisoft's policie"

I Dont care who you are thats funny :P

I just purchased Silent Hunter 3 and I was really impressed. Ubisoft seems to have gone down hill really, really fast.

Did you see the thread on the class action lawsuit against Nvidia&ATI? That was pretty funny too. PC has its laughs.

I read something about a price fixing accusation but never read more into it.

Well since all those pirates such as RELOADED are genius enough to crack pretty much any copy-protection nowadays, it doesn't surprise me that a company like Ubisoft would want their stuff ( Whether or not it's immoral )

Ubisoft is doomed, this is just plain ridiculous

Gotta hand it to those fine folks at RELOADED for being so good at what they do they in a way forced a company with all sorts of resources available to it to resort to using cracks to fix cracks lol.

so ubi, with all the wealth of programming talent at their disposal, could not stabilise their own game and had to resort to using a no cd crack from a reknowned pirating group instead?

I dunno. I think it's very efficient of the techie to use the crack. Why waste time and money paying some guy to write your code when some cracker punk's done all the work for you?

The thing is that Ubi already payed someone to write the code... and all that person did was steal a crack...

This guy/girl is gonna get fired...

well the problem was he didn't even changed it a bit and did not even removed any references of the cracker's name from the crack. that's like copying someone's paper and copying his name along with it instead of yours

Lol hopefully reloaded didn't have any backdoors in the patch or a lot of Ubisoft customers are going to get pissed.

Heh. Pretty dumb thing to do. Forgetting to change the name, I mean. Also a little funny that they use pirate-cracks to fix their own copy protection problems. The easier approach would be to skip the protection-part next time.

The whole story is skewed. The person giving it out wasn't giving it out from Ubisoft, it was just someone working there. Either way, it's not really news-worthy. Someone was probably having issues with activation due to some software, and a "green" employee just gave them something to fix it. And no, a cracker couldn't sue Ubisoft over this.

Just great.!!!....Now you have to wonder if a virus/trojan just came with the latest " official" patch...

Way to go....!!!

What the heck is wrong with game makers anymore ?...one company completely lifts it's artwork from other games ( not changed in the slightest )...now another uses a pirated hack to fix thier own game.

Maybe this will finally end the copy protection nightmare...

This made my day when I first read about it. One thought though, I'm thinking the programmers on the R6 Vegas2 team can't feel to secure in their jobs since Ubisoft decided to copy a crack rather than have them fix the game in house. :o

Ubisoft doesn't have a clue how to crack their own game so they use the real pros crack, classic!
