hello im thinking of upgrading to the new 8600 series. im thinking of getting the cheapest one which is the 8600GS, 79$, i think. right now i have an intel core 2 duo 1.86GHZ, 2GIG DDR2, and geforce 7300LE. As you can see it will be a huge jump for me. but things that im worried about is that the geforce 7300LE is on a PCI-E slot so can i just take the v-card out and put in the 8600 one or do i have to buy a whole bunch of other new things to install the 8600. And when buying a video card what are things you should know so you wont screwed over buying the wrong card. like how much power it takes and if its compatable with my system. i know this is alot to ask but if anyone can help me than i thank you.
The 8600GS is also a PCI-E card, and it will work fine on the PCI-E slot in your computer. Just take out your 7300LE and insert the new 8600 card. You don't need anything else. As for power requirements, what is the output of your power supply unit ?

You will need to open your case and look for the power supply. It should be a box-shaped component in the corner of the case. It should have some stickers, and that should say the amount of power output in Watts.

Open side panel, look at box in the upper left corner, the one with lots of cables coming out of it and a label attached on the side. That's the PSU, read the data on the sticker. You see things like the brand name and letters like W = watts, V = volts, A = amps. And no, there is no other way then this to find out.

My system, in my sig, uses 204W at full load. Check the Extreme Power Supply Calculator link in the 'Help Build a FAQ' sticky topic to total up your system. Be sure to count in upgrades in the future you have planned such as adding memory.

For an estimate you either take the PSU calculator for a spin or post your specs here. I agree with Dirk. A 500W PSU will easily provide sufficient output for your PC and new graphics card.
Any power supply that has a total of 26 amps on the +12v will run the 8600 series video card because those are the minimum specs for the 8800 series.roulettethedog
Exactly. 26A on the +12V and a 500W PSU will suffice for the 8600 series of cards.

Just open up your PC and have a look on the side of the power supply. It tells you how many Watts it is.
Nobody knows how many watts your computer has by your components. You can tell how many it uses, but not how many the PSU has. I have a 700watt PSU, and I barely use half of it. So you are going to have to look inside the case.
well i checked the back of the computer and i seen something written i dont know if this is it but i found 12V i think i found it writtin on the fan. is this it? and if not what is it?
