In my own stupidity i got thermal paste on the wrong side of my i7 CPU, so its on the gold plated parts. Gladly my computer didnt short but it couldnt find the CPU on startup. Any suggestions on how to clean the paste off the CPU?

Thanks, ill try the alcohol and something like a little brush. I have no reason to believe the CPU was fried, the computer didnt short and there was no burning smell. If it doesnt work after cleaning ill just sent it back.

IDK. Clean chip with alchohol. Remove all sources of power from the MB for the sake of paranoia and then apply alchohol.

how do you get thermal paste on the wrong side i mean come on if you don't know which side is the top you shouldn't be messing with an i7 in the first place. Then again it could have been an accident.

Having paste on the underside of your processor isn't that big of a deal - it'll come off easily. Your real problem that you now have thermal paste in the lands of the CPU socket. You'll need to get all the crap you can out of it without breaking off pins. FYI, you don't need to get ALL of it, because silver paste isn't conductive. It is, however, capacitive, so you don't want a lot left behind.
