Ok, so me and my buddies are kind of in a pickle here.  We have battlefield 3 we constantly play and love, but we like to have other games at our disposal.  We just finished Torchlight 2 (we are 80's and 90's) since we are all (except for one of us) pretty much sick of it.  It WAS a blast but now I just dont care about it.  Then we booted up Borderlands 2 and came to the realization that it just doesnt feel much different than BL1 and most of the group was wanting to pass on it (I warned them about this before it came out :P).  And now we are playing Path of Exile, which we are still giving a chance, but I am worried others wont want to continue (I like it a lot so far).

So my question for you guys is this.  What multiplayer (PC) games from this gen do you find so addicting and long lasting?  Games you can just play and play and play, and ones you always come back to.  For me so far it is Battlefield 3 (and BC2 but since we play BF3 BC2 is out) and in a sense, Minecraft.  There are other great ones, but many burn out after aout 60 - 80 hours.  Diablo III managed to keep  us for about 200, but we lost interest and hope the AH gets scrapped (or some solution arises) among other things.  We cannot find an ARPG that matches DII's longevity unfortunately.  I hope PoE or Grim Dawn do.

1. Team Fortress2

1. DayZ

2. BF3

3. Red Orchestra 2 or Chivalry

I have definatly spent the most time on TF2 and DayZ though.

If we are also talking non FPS games then Anno2070 Coop and Total War Shogun2 coop.

Any game genre at all.  Preferably not FPS honestly, since Battlefield is so darn good its hard to want to play any other.  Unless it is very different, but most FPS games in recent memory dont strive to be that different.  I miss games like Timesplitters, Perfect Dark and Goldeneye.  If Halo 3 and on come to PC I will buy those.

I have not played chivalry but my buddies did and they said it was fun but not worth buying.  TF2 is ok.  Never been a big fan of TF2 or L4D, though TF2 is way higher on my list than L4D.  CS and Portal are my favorite games from them.

DayZ is awesome no doubt.  We put man hours into that.  We are all keeping an eye on the standalone.

Battlefield 2 has remained pretty strong over the years (wish I could say the same for 2142), so that's my pick for the generation. Runner up would be Battlefield 3. Then there are all the Call of Duty games...pretty much all of them. I personally don't care for them, but a staggering ammount of players still play even CoD 4, not to mention its sequals and spin offs.

And, just to throw an oddball out there, Mass Effect 3. It still has many players (despite all the bad buzz around it, though it isn't that old) and has had grate support/new content from Bioware.

Hm. All of my friends who I told about Chivalry got it, and became immediately and hopelessly addicted. It's absolutely fantastic, and getting better all the time with loads of new content in free patches. And considering it's cheap as hell too, I'd say it's one the most "worth buying" games in recent memory. It's only $25 full retail, and you can almost always find it for like 15-17$, between steam and GMG. It's a very welcome breath of fresh air in competitive multiplayer. Intense, fast paced, brutally satisfying melee combat. Team Objective mode is incredible. huge maps, up to 64 players, and several different maps that play out like little mini-campaigns, where the attacking team has to push through multiple stages, opening new sections of the map as they go.

I just bought Premium (so did my buddies) and I am so glad I did.  It is awesome!  Kililng Floor was not my thing personally.  I didnt play it that much to be fair though.  Never been a big zombie fan, but DayZ was amazing.

DotA 2-1728 Hours Played.

Now, if you count in the time I've spent in DotA 1 since 2005....

DotA is THE game for timewasting.

lord knows how many hours WoW will generate but idk if ur up to paying 15 bucks monthly. if not guidlwars happens to be a very good franchise IF you think its for you. if you can get into it guildwars 1 & 2 will not dissappoint ive invested about 7000 hours across the two games and their expansions

the breakdown:

guildwars 1: 6300 hours (to put into perspective how long that is assuming your high school day was from 830 - 330 you would have spent LESS time from grades 9 - 11 in class than ive spent playing that game i know it like a science )

guildwars 2: 700 hrs (but it hasnt been out that long)

Seems like you guys like action rpgs, so check out Titan Quest and Immortal Throne.

And if you're looking for fps different from BF3, check out TF2, Quake Live, and Tribes: Ascend. They're all free too.

Very true, but if I am wanting to play with the friends that dont like the game enough, then it doesnt really matter :P.  it is hard because there are 4 of us and everyone has different opinions.  Mainly my friends wife who has a tough time getting into extremely complex games (path of exile) and prefers more straightforward ones (Diablo III).

WoW for me, 27 days played on that game (hate it now). Other games I do not really play for that long. Maybe on average each game I own, at least 48 hours. Obviously, I have more hours played into more games than others, but thats just my rough estimate.

battlefield BC2 lasted me 100 or so hours. it's my third most played PC game, behind guild wars (270 hours according to steam, but i bet it's more) and guild wars 2 (630 hours last i checked, and it's been a while since i checked). other than those, i just don't really play MP games that much, especially on PC.

Lol I put about the same into GW1 as well.  I put (according to steam which must be wrong.  I know I have played more than my bro and he has 218)) 215 into BC2, about 250 into Diablo 3.  Thousands (litterally no idea how long) into Diablo 2, and BF3 I will never know since Origin keeps track of time so poorly.  It lowballs the number BIG time.  I know I have played at least a couple hundred if not more.

The answer most people have is WoW. So many people play it to death, stop then return to it so many times over the years.

The MP experience I had was Counter-Strike 1.6

You might want to check steam to see if CS source is still $4.99

It's not an ARPG but good multiplayer and addicting.

Haha CS is great, but we have played that alot (and it isnt this gen as I said in the title), unless you count GO, which my buddies are not interested in.  I am a bit, but not a lot.
