Whats the one game (old or new) that made you go out and spend more money to upgrade your computer. How much did it end up costing you to play that one game?
Mine was Oblivion - New graphic card $350
$400 after game

no game in particular. my laptop was 3 years old when i got my new PC. the lappy was no longer up to the job.
supreme commander and stalker are already ace and im looking foreward to the witcher and bioshock (off the top of my head). these games would not have been possible on my lappy (and amd 3000+ and ati mobility radeon 9600 64MB).
The first time I bought a specific part to upgrade just for a single game would've been when I spent 80 dollars in 1996 to buy 8MB of ram to upgrade the PC at the time to 16MB, just so I could play the Duke Nukem 3D SHAREWARE.
Another time, I guess would've been when I upgraded from a GeForce FX5200 to an ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro in early September of 2003. Halo had just come out, Far Cry demo wouldn't run very well on the 5200, and I knew UT2004, Doom 3, and Half-Life 2 would all be out soon (though it took another year to finally have Doom 3 and HL2).
The last time I upgraded for a specific game was when I went from 1GB to 1.5GB of ram to stop the stuttering in Battlefield 2.

Oh I remember the Duke Nukem days. :P
Aha!
A Voodoo 2 Video Accelerator PCI with 12 megs of memory for QUAKE 2!
Paired with a S3 Virge 4 Meg PCI main video card.
You could actually put 2 voodoo 2 in SLI mode for a whoopin' 24 megs of RAM. Ironically Voodoo 2 SLI mode's main competitor was NVIDIA Riva TNT.
I wanted to get better performance out of WoW when it first came out, so I swapped out my FX5200 for an X700pro and bought a gig of ram. total it was about 350 bucks..my first upgrade ever.
I might upgrade for UT2007(UT3) but i build a new PC about once a year so no game really is going to make me upgrade sooner
Ohhhh boy is everyone going to laugh at me. My first ever computer was 300mhz, 4mb vid card and 128mb ram.
After owning it for 4 yrs, I upgraded to play the Sims1 and 3 expansions, because only the original Sims1 (without expansions) would work. I got Computer # 2! 1.1ghz AMD Athlon, 64 MB Nvidia vcard and 512mb ram. Here's where you'll laugh: I've still got computer #2 and haven't upgraded since due to lack of money...
hehe
Never really upgraded my video card for a game but I think I will for crysis, i'll upgrade my whole com in factsimszebing
I think I will also.

Honestly? Never done it. I don't have enough cash lying around to ever base a PC upgrade on the game market--I do it when I can plan and save and execute the changes.
Well, My first PC I had was a 300 Mhz Celeron with 32MB pc 100 with 10 GB HDD and an Integrated Vid Card with 4MB.
That was on 1998, After that PC i got a Pentium 3 with 667Mhz with 128 MB pc 100 , 20 GB HDD and integrated 8MB Vid Card. I played a lot of Starcraft Brood war back then (they anounce Starcraft 2 in 2weeks WOHOO ^_^ ) , Flight Simulator 98 and Unreal Tournament and it played really well at low settings. I upgraded that comp to 512 MB and later i bought a Vodoo 5 5500 PCI that between November 2000-2001.
Then on early 2002 I bought another 256MB pc100 to upgrade it to 768MB, and a GeForce 3 TI 500
After that comp, on late 2002 I bought a AMD 2600 XP with 512MB of pc133 at first to run the CPU at 266 FSB, then I sold that ram and bought 2x 256 MB DDR 333 and mid 2003 I got a GeForce 4 4600.
By 2004 I bought 1x 512 MB DDr400 but it ran at 333 cuz the other 2 sticks were 333 and the mobo was 333 too, and mid 2004 I got a job and bought a new 6800GT (EVGA) and a 19" Monitor that support upto 1600x1200 @ 70hz.
Then that mobo burned out and i got a new DDR400 nforce 2 and I sold the 512MB DDR 333 and got 1x512MB DDR400 and then I had a total of 1GB DDR400 for the first time!!! =]
by 2005 I got another 1GB and then I had 2GB total and that comp I had till Q3 2006 when I sold the 2 GB's of RAM and got a E6600 with 2x 512 MB DDR pc 6400 ( 800Mhz) and a Nforce 570 Slit-A with a new HDD SATA 3g 320 GB and in January I sold my 6800GT and Got a 8800GTS (EVGA) and last week I bought another 1GB stick pc6400 800mhz that im waiting to recieve this week.
And for the forseeable future this will be the comp I stay with till games start to lag then Ill get ANOTHER 8800GTS to put it on SLI and stay happy for a while more . >B] jejejje

sounds very similar....i uppgraded to a 9800 pro AIW a lil later though. Most recent upgrade 512 to 1 gig to play bf2 on medium...what settings do you play on with 1.5 gig?....i hope its not high...haha cause ill be buying some more ramm for my really old machine...
i upgraded to my 9800 after i bought moh:pa..and i didn't have the proper shaders or something...i love wwii games...but this game wasn't so hot..well the SP was alright, but the MP...was horrible..until it was properly patched that is.
Next upgrade? Soooooon....I just want to play the Unreal Engine 3 on high settings...because it seems many games are going to be using that engine (moh, bia, ro, ut2007). so i should be set..i want to upgrade to vista and dx10 and what by the end of the year...but thats only a dream.
Well I had a old PC and I was trying to play Diablo2 LOD and it kept freezing when I was solo baaling my lvl 95, and I'd die. It ticked me off alot so one night after I died I bought a new PC right then and there.
My first PC had 500 Mhz celeron, Integrated graphics, 4 gig HDD, and 32MB of Ram. The only thing I played on it was Doom and Delta Force. That was back in 2000. I got 128MB of more Ram so I could play Delta Force 2. Then I got a TNT2 card with 32mb.
The computer I have now is a lot better, but not up to todays standards. I would say standards from 3 years ago.
Prehistorix:
I started with a Commodore 64 because of Rubicon, Dizzy (the egg) Katakis and later Turrican, Creatures,
I moved to Amiga 500 becasue of Rainbow Island ,Targahan, Shadow Warriors,Walker, Disposable Hero, AnotherWorld, shadow ofthe beast 2, Pinball Illusions/fantasies, (actually,I knew i wanted one when i saw a SpaceAce demo through a computer stores window, though i ended up hating the game itself)
I moved to Amiga 1200 because of Super Stardust, Banshee, Alien-breed,Skeleton Crew, Deliverance AGA, OctaMED
Modern age:
I moved to 1.8 ghz.P4, 533 FSB, 512ram gforce3 64mb because of: Quake3-Arena, Enclave, GTA3, NFS6-HotPursuit2, Freelancer
I moved to 2.8 ghz p4 800 fsb,1 gig ram, 9800pro128mb becasue of HalfLife2, Painkiller, UT-2004, WarriorWithin, Doom3
I upgraded my gfx and sound to x1950 and Xi-Fi Platnium for better Painkiller and all of above and hopefully for UT3 and clive barker's Jerichoto run (even on the most basic settings..) i Also intend to get 2 gig ram when i see it selling real cheap (for shorter load times)
