In my personal opinion jagged alliance 2 is my favourite turn based game to date.
I modded the game to an extent and after 10 years im still hooked on the game.

The Heroes of Might and Magic series, especially IV and V. After that, Civilization IV, King's Bounty and Etherlords 2 and 1.

I like XCOM, Silent Storm, Temple of Elemental Evil and Age of Wonders.

I'm interested in playing the Jagged Alliance games and King's Bounty.

Wish they would make some new TBS games.... everything is FPS/RTS/etc. Would love to see a new turn-based RPG along the lines of ToEE or how about a true sequel or remake of XCOM? (turn based of course ;p).

jagged alliance 2 gold is a must have.

you can get it very cheap from amazon or other sites.
and if you get sick of the original you can always download the 1.13 fanmade patch.

Heroes of Might and Magic III is my favorite turn-based strategy and one of the best games I ever played. Notable mentions would be Disciples II, Civilization IV, Etherlords II, Gladius and King's Bounty: The Legend.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (aka X-Com 1) is the best.

I don't know, there is so many of them i enjoy.

For the combat system, i would go with temple of elemental evil. Age of wonders 2 was overall awesome, so was Galactic civ 2 Twilight of Arnor.

Lately however i've been playing an open source game called Ufo: Alien Invasion which is kinda similar to X-Com. Its pretty deep, has good gameplay and last long enough to entertain you for a week. I wanted to vouch this game up for any turn based fans earlier this week but rather than create a new thread, i'll link in here, it's free and about 370 mb to download. If anyone is interested, check it out over http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/

Silent Storm Gold.....and it's not buggy at all!!!

OP, if you like Jagged Alliance, you should definiteley play Silent Storm. JA3 is built off an upgraded Silent Storm engine.

Civilization 3 for me. I felt tlike Civ 4 was simplified a bit, but I can't put my finger on the exact differences.

(I'll stick with more recent games with the exception of my number one pic because it's so awesome. X-COM, Civ II, and the like were stellar games, but a bit long in the tooth.)

1) Jagged Alliance 2

2) Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin, and Afrika Korps.

3) Space Empires IV

4) Disciples II

5) War in the Pacific (but only for multiplayer. The AI cheats)

6) AGEOD's Birth of America II or Napoleon's Campaigns or American Civil War (depends on which subject interests you most)

7) Silent Storm

8) 7.62mm High Calibre

9) Crown of Glory

10) Temple of Elemental Evil (with the community patch)

I was just about to say how could such a thread go on for so long without mention of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, but naval pulled through! Anyways that game is a masterpiece, you can find it on any all-time top review scores list.
