It is a matter of preferance really, but I prefer small worlds, more compact, and you wont have to walk as long if you want to go to the dungeon or whatever. Keep in mind that one character can use multiple worlds and housing isnt really that big in this game like with minecraft.
Go with a small world to start out. Once you craft more materials and better weapons, go up to a bigger world. You'll find more ores, areas, and treasures.
Terraria?

Terraria is was pretty much my goty after Dark Souls. Nothing else this year managed to capture my interest (and I probably bought 15 games last year). What would you recommend if terraria doesn't meet your heterosexual criteria?
Ah thanks for the replies guys! Okay, I had made an large world, but I can switch worlds or make new ones without losing anything right such as items and such? And yeah I'm trying to figure out a whole bunch of stuff. But it's really fun so far though. Gamerperson33
No items are lost upon changing worlds. What you store in the chests are still there when you come back and the items in your inventory stay in your inventory and your items in the piggy bank stay in the piggy bank (which is universal for each character). I have 2 worlds for one character so... yeah.
