Why is it that Team Fortress 2 needs to update almost every day?

It is like I start up steam and the first thing it does is update that game.

I can't understand how a person can complain about the updates.

You only paid for the game one time.

But Valve are still making updates for you.

They are quick.

They are discreet.

Valve do what they must, because, they can.

I can understand people that don't like Team Fortress 2 complaining about the updates. I bought TF 2 in a sale to see what all the fuss was about and didn't really like it.

However there is a solution at hand, if you are sick and tired of Team Fortress 2 continually updating when you start steam then TURN OFF auto updating on Team Fortress 2. Just right click on TF 2 in steam. select properties from the menu. Then click on the updates tab and change it from "auto update" to "do not auto update this game".

By doing that you ensure the game will only update when you start the game.

Which would you rather have? A company supporting the game by fixing bugs, releasing new content and updating the game or a company that just leaves the game out to die?

For some reason when my TF2 updates it downloads 95% of the update at full speed then halts to dial-up speed, taking forever to download the last few MBs. It gets old after a while and it only happens with TF2.

Du'h... Stupid question. Everyone know that a company that release a game with bugs should do everything in their power not to fix it. How dare they release patches.

You would think all the bugs would be fixed as often as updates are released.

I rather have them working on the new Half-Life, Team Fortress 2 performs just fine, it doesn't need to be updated, the only game that needs updating to the best of my knowledge would be Fallout New Vegas, a game that is buggy as hell.

the reason tf2 is constantly being updated is to implement bug and crash fixes, most of the time being on the mac. they also add new things here and there such as UI tweaks, as well as some large things like new maps (they add multiple new maps a year, fyi) and new items. the game is slowly evolving over time, in short. thats why they patch it so much. you are getting tons of free content from the small purchase of the orangebox or just tf2 alone. it may be intrusive, but its worth it, for sure.

Chill out man. Here's a tip. Start Steam well before you are going to play. Start it and brush your teeth. Or eat. Or drink some water. Or excrete. Or do some pushups. Unless you're running on garbage internet, these updates should take no longer than 5 minutes.

My friend gave me TF2 on the x-mas deals from steam. Now the short time i have played i have encountered about 20 bugs.

The game is in no way flawless. And everytime they add something new to the game (be that a weapon or a map or even a new hat) something else can get broken.

Anyway updates = good

No updates != good

Any Steam game, that needs the s/n, has it when you right click on those certain games, view game CD key.

Depends what DSL connection, atm I have an 8mb DSL internet connection and it's fine, sure I have to wait a while for game downloads from Steam, EADM, etc, but that's hardly a problem.

Fallout New Vegas is buggy as hell, so much so that it almost makes the game unplayable, thus it needs to be patched.

Team Fortress 2 is not, in fact, it worked flawlessly even back in 2007 when it was released, thus it does not required patching.

That is my logic.

There is of course a strong possibility you also would have complained when there had been no updates at all...

Like other people said, start up steam, go to the kitchen, get an apple, sit down in front of the computer, exhale on the apple and make it shine on yer sleeve, and eat the bugger.

The two things that will happen is that you'll be ready to play when the apple is finished and that in two months time your doctor will call and ask why he doesn't see you anymore... ;)

What you still don't understand is that Valve has absolutely nothing to do with Bethesda/Obsidian, what you're saying is irrelevant. Game is not perfect, it has and will still always have bugs to fix or other things that need patching and you have bigger problems to worry if a few mb patches are too much for you like actually playing games online decently. You can fix this in only one way, uninstall the game or ignore it and that is not sarcasm.

Random glitches are always being fixed with these patches. It's amazing.

This thread has so much fail in it.

If you don't like games that get patches, go play Black Ops. That game gets like 2 patches for pc so far.

Team Fortress 2 isn't flawless, but it's really polished. Might you want to guess why it is so polished? It's because Valve has patched it. You should be glad that they give us so much free content. It makes me sick when I see a post like this. I didn't play TF2 for about 1 month and I went back to it yesterday and it was refreshing how much new content is there. Makes you want to play the game more and I didn't have to pay any additional money for this content.

Also I don't think you understand how dev teams are split up. There is always a small chunk that is focused on supporting post-release products. It's a phase of software development and it is very important IMO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_development_process). Most of the team is probably finishing Portal 2 right now, but there will always be a chunk left to support their released games.

I still can't believe somebody is complaining that their game is being supported. Usually people complain because games do not get patched.

Its still a fun game on 360, but its nowhere near the pc version, which you can keep comign back to over and over agian.

It's not that all true that DSL is slow. There's more than one DSL available, with each of them having different speeds. VDSL can go up to 52 Mbit/s downstream and 16 Mbit/s upstream. DSL Rings can provide bandwidth of up to 400 Mb/s. Anyway, most cable providers don't even deliver good speed unless you pay a freaking lot's to have it.

10+ megabit dsl is easily obtainable and not that expensive... which is standard cable speeds. Standard or default DSL speeds are pretty slow by todays standards, but its enough for most people and cheaper than cable or fios.

Do you even play TF2? If not, just turn auto-updates off. It's really easy.

If you play TF2, well, be glad they update it as much as they do. The game keeps improving and those updates are small.

Why do you even own the 360 version then?

I was not talking about graphical capabilities of the games, just the fact that they both have virtually no bugs/glitches\ at time of launch.

I own it on PC but played it on a friend's 360. Other than input device and screen resolution, I got the same experience.
