I have a nvidia dual gpu. How can I check to make sure SLI is configured correctly and working?

Check in Nvidia Control Panel, under 3D Settings / Configure Sli, physX, surround, if it's set to Maximum 3D Performance. Next you can get programs like MSi Afterburner or EVGA Precision and enable their respective On screen Display to show % of use of GPU 1 and GPU2.

Use a program like MSI Afterburner to monitor your GPU usage. If one of your cards isn't being used in a particular game, then go into the nVidia control panel and do the following to enable SLI for that game.. nVidia control panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings -> Program Settings tab -> Select game from the drop down menu -> SLI performance mode -> Select "Force Alternate Frame Rendering" from the drop down menu
