I really need to get a better PC. The big question is, should I bother upgrading my current one or buying a new one? (Assuming I'm keeping my current monitor, speakers, kb/mouse).

Current PC:

AMD Athlon 2400+, 2Ghz

512 MB RAM

ATI Radeon 9700 PRO, 128MB

Soundblaster cheap whatever

The thing is that if I upgrade this PC I will need to buy a DVD reader because new games usually come on DVDs. Also I will not poke around in the PC myself, I want somebody else to take responsibility for that.

So maybe paying $1600 and get a really hot new box of high performance goodness is a better idea?

You could easily just upgrade the ram and gpu, but if you got $1600 and dont need keyboard monitor etc, Id say buy a new one. Prices will drop soon and youll be able to get a pretty decent one.

Even if prices do drop on processors, that won't effect the end prices of the towers.  Besides with $1600 you can get a really nice rig built for yourself.  Better than mine even (see signature).  Prices always drop... when something new comes out.  That's how technology is.  If you wait for prices to drop, your essentially waiting for something new to come out.  Haha.  Granted there are some towers at this moment, especially HP, that are on clearance because they were just temporarily put out there to handle the release of Vista, and the next models won't be entirely different (except for maybe more RAM).  And in that respect you can get some good deals on the models on their way out.

I know I had a Dell Dimension 3000 2.8GHz with only 512MB of RAM and was kind wanting something a little more powerful, but then I tried upgrading the RAM to 2GB and the thing runs much better lol.  So you might want to try that first and see if it makes an improvement.  If you buy RAM at most stores, you can return it if you don't want it.  This is just a personal experience I don't know if it will improve yours (also depends on what you use your computer for), but just thought I chip in my 2 cents worth. :)

I'd buy a new PC all together if you have $1600 to blow.

Here's something I made for a friend real quick but I'll link it here.

CPU:  Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40 GHz                                $374.99
GFX:  XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB                                     $359.99
RAM:  OCZ (OCZ2SOE8002GK) DDR2-800 2x1GB                   $170.99
HDD:  Western Digital (WD2500KS) Caviar 250GB                  $79.99
DVD:  LG GSA-H22L 18X DVD-Writer                                     $42.99
MOBO: Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus Socket 775 nVidia 650i SLI      $235
PSU:  OCZ (OCZ600GXSSLI) GameXStream 600                    $112.49
CASE: Thermaltake VC3000BWS Armor Jr                             $112.69

TOTAL: $1489.13
+TAX   $208.47 (14%)
NEW TOTAL: $1697.60 CDN
                   $1495.68 USD or less

The onboard sound on the Asus mobo is pretty good but if you're hardcore sound snag yourself an X-fi for around $49 OEM, $70 RETAIL.

I was thinking about this:

http://www.komplett.se/k/config.asp?ConfigSystemId=10180 (In swedish but you can probably figure out what the things are)

I got my current PC from them in same manner and had no problems with it.

I wouldn't recommend AMD this year, Intel's Conroe are dominating this time around... I also recommend at least an 8800 GTS 320 MB Edition.
