I'm in need of some help help... i've been offered a trade for my gaming laptop i have.

G73JH-RBB05 (the best buy model)

It has a i7 core at 1.6 but oc's to 2.8

6 gigs of ddr3

1600x900 17 in screen

ATI Mobility 5870

for his Alienware aurora 1 year old... recently replaced motherboard and cooler.... "repair man was fixing cooler and broke the tube and coolant spilled over the mb"

CPU=Intel core I7 920(quad core with hyper threading) @ 3.2ghz (liquid cooler replaced with a brand new one by DELL in Dec 2010)

MOTHERBOARD=Alienware X58 chipset with sli/crossfire support(replaced by DELL with a brand new one in Dec 2010 as well)

GRAPHICS CARD=ATI 4890 1gb ddr5 (upgraded from stock nvidia gts240 Nov 2010)

HARD DRIVE=1TB 7200rpm stock drive(1000gb's of storage)

MEMORY=12GB Alienware brand DDR3 1333mhz TRIPLE channel ram(This amount of ram is future proof for the next 4 years easily)

CASE=Alienware Aurora with fully function AlienFX and Thermal Controls

POWER SUPPLY=Alienware OEM 575watt powersupply

Dell 20 in mointor at 1600 * 900

Alienware keyboard and mouse

The warrenty is out but i can purchase another year for $220.. and if i need a bigger psu i can buy the 875 watt one for 90 off ebay..

Any advice would be greatly apreachated.. i know nothing about how reliable dell is as far as components...

The GPU in the desktop is a bit weak but the rest seems solid. You would want to upgrade the GPU though.

I think it would be worth it. I have no idea how a mobility 5870 performs compared to a 4890, but I can attest that the 4890 is a pretty powerful card. About 8% slower than a GTX460 IIRC. If you trade you get a much better computer that would last much longer than your laptop. If you put in a modern GPU then you would have a beast of a rig.

I would say keep it as is, dont bother with the warranty. The 4890 will be good for another year, so save up for a PSU and a GPU for either later in the year or next year and buy something awesome!

I rekon you'd be better off selling the laptop and using the money to build a PC.
