I just bought a new PC and it came with an nvidia 7300LE graphics card.  I'm wanting to upgrade but I'm a total beginner.

Can someone recommend a good graphics card in the $200-$300 range.  Also, will I need an additional power supply?

Thanks in advance.

The only graphics cards that are really worth it right now are the 8800 series, you can either get at 8800GTS in like the 330 dollar range and yea then you will need a 500+ W PSU like the Antec TPII 550W .... or you can wait a little bit and get the 8600 series when it comes out relatively soon

I recently got an ATI 1900 crossfire edition (512mb, 620/720) and it is pretty amazing - I can play EVERY game at the highest setting. I had to upgrade my PS to a Seasonic 550w.

Yes, i would recommend waiting for the 8600 series. Like the 7600 and 6600 i think it won't require a lot of power.

I third it

The 8600 ultra will be released at $180 meaning it's the best value I've ever seen in a graphics card.

edit: I think the release date is around mid march so you're really not waiting that long.

I would have to disagree, if the original poster is using Vista, ( note if its a new one then ain all likeliness thats what thew person is using.) Then just upgrading to the 8800 series at this point in time is not going to help , my LAN buddy is using a 8800GTX, and having nothing, but problems in the environment, (VISTA) due to mostly the drivers from Nvidia not being well prepped. Where as I am here using an ATI x1950XTX on Vista, and I havent had a problem thankfully. I would most definitely agree wait if possible, so that Nvidia can get their act together, and ATI can throw their hat in the DX10 arena. I really suggest holding off on Nvidia until the drivers are fixed

Wait a month then get a Geforce 8600 Ultra for about 180 dollars, or a the next higher up one (around 240 I think).  Should work with a 450 Watt PSU, so if you need to upgrade it should only cost you about 30 dollars (my 550W Rosewill PSU cost 37 and runs great...pretty too).

Don't buy a new graphics card at the moment. Wait until ATI release some DX10 cards, and wait for the GeForce 8600 series.
