Here are the first pictures of the card AMD hopes to take on NVIDIA's bestselling GeForce GTX 760 with, the Radeon R9 285. This particular one, branded by Sapphire, featuring its Dual-X cooling solution. The R9 285 is based on a brand new chip by AMD, codenamed "Tonga." It's rumored to feature the same stream processor count as one of the "Tahiti" variants, while featuring higher clocks, and a narrower 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, a fact confirmed by this card's marketed 2 GB of memory. Given how marketing material of the R9 285 is ready, its launch may not be far away.

Given the fact that R9 280X is near GTX770 performance, this might be between GTX770 and GTX780 :)

2GB is not enough IMO atleast not in this performance / price range.

I am worried too about the 2GB 256bit while inferior models R9 280 and R9 280X have 3GB 384bit, but who knows? It might be as effective as Maxwell is with lower memory bandwith.

I think it's going to be slightly better than 770 but not in the middle of it and the 780

Well probably, but if they want to hit GTX760 sales, they need to place it at $250 maximum.

Now if this happens I can start a whole conspiracy theory of what might happens due to the fact that the new GTX8xx information will be released in 2 days :).

I want this to happen so it can finally drive down the price of the r9 280(x) series. It was crazy that last year, the 7970 was below 200 dollars in the late summer/early fall and released at 300 dollars.

As far as the rumors I have been following, this is supposed to replace the 280 and there is a rumored 285x that will replace the 280x.

From Anandtech: With that said, given AMD’s current pricing and performance they seem to have done a good job picking a favorable location. In previous times AMD would go up against the $400 GTX 770 with their similarly priced 7970GE; now they're doing so with the slightly slower R9 280X, priced at $100 less. Consequently NVIDIA has the slightest edge of about 5% on our new benchmark suite, but it’s close; much closer than a $300 card should be. On a pure price/performance basis then the R9 280X is not to be ignored, as it’s going to come within a few percent of GTX 770 – depending on the game of course – for $100 less. Those are big savings that are hard to argue with and will help make R9 280X a “win” for AMD.

That would be logical.

I believe that with the 2GB 256bit, they can go as low as they want in price to compete with Nvidia.
