Do you believe this might be enough for the new gtx 480 and an amd 955?

[QUOTE="wklzip"]Assuming it has the same power requirements as a HD5970, it wont be enough.ionusX
the box claims 600watts or better (and thats with a mediocre 12v rail)
36 amps on the 12v rails of a 600w psu is not mediocre, its crappy, at least when running a beefy gpu.[QUOTE="ionusX"]

Worse than crappy, It probably has most of its amps on the 3.3v/5v rail and the 18 amps are max output. My 400W Max output PSU has 15A and 14A on its 12v rails :O And that thing is ooooolllllllddddddd, the brand doesnt even exist anymore i beleive.[QUOTE="ionusX"]

However, the high quality name brand PSU's from 600 watts to 700 watts from brands like corsair, cooler master, thermaltake, and seasonic, should have at least around 50A on a single +12 volt rail so if you get a high quality brand then you should be okay. For a 5870 based system (depending on whether you have a Core i5/i7 or AMD AM3 cpu) I'd recommend at least a high quality 500 watt for an AMD system and a 550 watt for an Intel system using a 5870 and keep in mind these are bare minimums at least from what i've seen on the power consumption charts, but these are just rough estimates so anyone feel free to correct me :).Why would you get a GTX 480. Yout CPU is AMD, why not get an AMD GPU????landogg69
Will it make a big difference if I go with a amd gpu? Plus the 480 is coming out soon I would like to see how it performs on benchmarks. Its $600 I would like to spend it well too.
It depends on what Video Card you are going to get. I'd recommend this power supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139012&cm_re=corsair_power_supply-_-17-139-012-_-ProductThanks for the info. So can you recommend one power supply?

What in the...something's not right there. 600W-rated PSU, two +12V rails, 18A each for a total of 36A. Then there's my PCP&C Silencer 610, rated at-you guessed it-610W, which has a single +12V rail carrying 49A. No way that 10W could result in such a massive difference-something has to be radically different with how those wattage ratings are calculated. If that SemiAccurate article is right about the 42A requirement for GTX 480, then that PSU isn't going to cut it. I have my doubts given the rampant anti-NVIDIA slant that source has, but it's still something to keep in mind. I'd rather not find out the hard way, and just get a nicer PSU to begin with (though not something completely overkill like 1KW).NamelessPlayer
A friend showed me this one what do you think?

I had a similar question. If the 480 doesnt preform as expected compared to the 5970 can my 700watt PSU (im pretty sure it will, but asking jsut incase) support both a 5870 as primary, and my old 8800GTX as physx? Also i already have 1 120mm fan, so shoul i get another 1? i dont think i can fit 2 in my case.

Well you won't be able to do that without some trickery or older drivers for your 8800 I think. IIRC, NVidia has made it so that if the computer detects anything other than a GeForce as the primary, their drivers will automatically stop PhysX from working so your 8800 would be sitting there and doing nothing. I'm not all too aware of this, but that's the gist of it as far as I understand.
