With 2008 nearing to an end figure it be interesting to share which year you enjoyed best. My favorite game for 2008 has to be Mass Effect but 2007 PC gaming was defiantly the year for me. Call of Duty 4 and Team Fortress 2 by far two of the most incredible titles in recent years.

There still are some games to come, but as far as now, I'd go with 2007.

IMHO, they were both quite bad years. Aside from Crysis, Witcher, STALKER and Penumbra, nothing really interesting has been released.

Gaming has been decreasing in quality since ~2000. 2006-> has been pretty awful. Too many generic games, not enough innovative/ambitious games. Unlike the 90's. Damn I miss the 90's.

In my opinion 2007 and 2008 are not bad years, but simply just not as good as the wealth of great games that we got in 2004 or way back in 1998-1999.

We got World in Conflict, The Orange Box,, Company of Heroes and many more since 06 till now.

Just my humble opinion.)

They're not THAT bad... but I'd expect a LOT more from games these days. I mean, Deus Ex was made in 2000 and there still hasn't been a game that has come even close to being better. Same thing with Thief, System Shock etc. I guess I should lower my standards then... *sigh*

Ok, you can't really compare them side-by-side. And it's not necessarily better. Still, it's pretty ridiculous to say that it's not even close. There has been a decent number of purely amazing games lately. Supreme Commander and Aquaria are other examples.

So far, 2007 has pwned 2008. Sure, we still have L4D and GTA IV to look forward to (and possibly RA3), but that's not enough to even tie with 2007.

Even though I think that STALKER is one of the best games since... well, ever. It's not even close to the masterpieces known as Thief, Deus Ex and System Shock 2 (+ several other games, like X-Com, Doom etc.) Besides, they were made 7+ years before STALKER, and I always judge games relatively to the time they were released. STALKER is what saved the year 2007 for me though. With the patches and Oblivion Lost mod it truly becomes one of my favorite games of all time.

Yeah, STALKER wasn't as amazing of a 2007 game as Deus Ex was in 2000, but it doesn't stop it from being inherently amazing and very much in Deus Ex' league, if not a better game overall. Basically, it's not that the past 2 years have less actual quality than in the past, it's just that the games are less groundbreaking. I'd still take Painkiller over Doom any day of the week. I judge games on quality, not impact.

If so far is any indication to go by then: 2007 by a mile.

2008 we've had Mass Effect (and for others Crysis Warhead and Sins) Yay...

For many (not necessarily myself, other millionaires) Spore, Far Cry 2, Clear Sky, BIA: HH, failed to live up to their hype.

Which games do you think were exceptional about this year?

By exceptional I mean that the year has had games released that people will play in the next few years (2-3.5 years). Maybe games like WAR, Left 4 Dead?, the new Wow expansion will probably keep players and have more people joining, Fallout3?, Farcry2?, Crysis Warhead? 2007 has had alot of games that people will play for the years to come, CoD4, The Orange Box, The Witcher, just to name a few. Maybe exceptional was too strong of a word to use for what I wanted to say. I'll slow down when I type next time. :D

So far, 2008 has brought us SOASE, Crysis Warhead and GalCiv 2: Twilight of the Arnor for AAA exclusives, with an average of 9.0 per AAA exclusive.

2007 brought us Crysis, World in Conflict, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade and GalCiv 2: Dark Avatar in the same category, with an average of 9.325 to each AAA exclusive.

On that basis, 2007 takes it.

However, the highlight of the year has only started. Let's wait for the year to finish before comparing.

2008 hands down. The upcoming releases are going to blow everything in 2007 out of the water. This year is just far more superior, imo. Just look at all the games out this year compared to last's. It's a no brainer for me.

Basing a judgement of which year was better based on scores (and not even all scores, just the "AAA exclusives") is really, really, really, really, really bad.

Whats the best way to do it then? Sales? Number of games? Number of games in each genre? Number of games with unique themes? Number of games that make you go OMGWTFBBQ?

It would be about listing the games you actually played from each year and determining which year was the best.

Scores are meaningless. Most sites didn't even review my favorite 2007 game at all (Aquaria). As for my most anticipated 2008 games, King's Bounty and A Vampyre Story, well, the former is probably never going to get a Gamespot review, and the latter will score like 6.5 and get a "only fans of the adventure genre will like this game" review here. (Yeah, I know that King's Bounty is out, I just don't have time to play a 70h game right now.)

2007 has been better imo.

2008 still has good games and others still to come like nutcrackr has listed but this year hasn't had as much hype/blockbuster games as last year. I agree with Biggest Loser that so far this year some games have not lived up to their hype.

I think 2009 could or will be better than 2007 and 2008.
Alan Wake,
Diablo 3,
Starcraft 2,
Street Fighter IV,
The Sims 3(yes:P),
Dawn of War 2,
BioShock 2,
COD6,
Mirrors Edge,
Operation Flashpoint 2,
Mafia 2?,
and Fear 2 are the ones I can think off my head.

Citizen Kane was made something like 100 years ago and it's still regarded as the best movie ever made. Evolution is a myth.

The last several years have been rubbish. There was tons of great stuff that came out in 2004 (HL2, WoW, FarCry), but not much since that time.

Both years are alright IMO, i'm looking forward to quite a few games this season, but about the 2004 thing, your right there was some pretty awesome stuff that year, but how is WoW that good?

TF2 is ovverated
