I'm open to old and new games; I've been having a hankering to play a medieval RTS game but something more on the build/manage style. I've played Age of Empires series and its not exactly what i'm looking for this time (although i love these games). I'd like something a bit more chilled out, more strategy oriented. Something where i can build up my kingdom or what not, diplomacy, resource gathering, economy etc. War and all would be great but should not be the central point of the game (i'm thinking of medieval series here, but only seen a friend play it). This doesn't really have to be an RTS type of game - really, something like Civ, simcity, AoE mixed together? I'd like to have a relaxing time builing up an empire not go click happy controlling 100's of units :) Some browser games actually are almost what i'm looking for, but i want something with more depth and... better :) Please throw some ideas at me.

Medieval 2: Total War although there is no resource gathering. You build your nations, armies, there's diplomacy, and you can fight the battles.

While it's not exactly the medieval period, you should check out the City Building series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_Building_Series

If I remember correctly the games in the series cover ancient Rome, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and ancient China.

settlers and dawn of discovery look promising, any more along those lines? Perhaps to elaborate - games like the old warcraft or AoE have a very temporary building aspect - as soon as the round is over, the village is gone and you're up to create a new one. I'd like to keep going with my cities etc :) anyway, thanks for the recommendations so far!

Any age of empires, especially Age of Mythology, best RTS ever imo.

If you read my post, Civ 4 and AoE are games i'm familiar with (love em! Civ series = best game ever) but i'm looking for something like toys to play with :) Anyway, i still appreciate your input :D I think Settlers and Dawn of Discovery are kind of what i'm looking for. But let me expand on my original question - what if i emphasize economy? War is fun and all :) but i'd like to play around with resources/economy more so than war. Would your suggestions change?

With DoD at least, you can set the game so you don't have to worry about the military part of it all, and concentrate solely on economics and trade relations.

This. Stronghold 1 is also great, and Stronghold 2 is bearable with the latest patches.

Crusader is my favorite in the series, but I like the way there are hero-like units in Legends. It adds a bit of a twist to the series. Dragons ftw.

the Paradox Europa Universalis games fit your description, (heavy diplomatic and economic emphasis) but they are as unforgiving as buck and are definitely not 'chill'. They definitely strive for historical realism.

But you can give them a try.

I own Patrician III but haven't played it, but it has a great reputation as a trading/merchant sim (you run the Hanseatic league, if I'm not mistaken.)
