Amazed so many people are still playing that game. Even after all these years I cannot believe the following it still has. I annot figure that out since it is still the same game and nothing has really changed much since it was released. Suprised Blizzard has not cashed in on that by releasing another littler expansion just to sap a little bit out of the players.

LoD isn't free... anyway, who would stop playing Diablo 2 after those really intense outdated bloodbaths?

MMO has monthly fees (15$ permonth, etc), to play online with Diablo , you dont need to pay, to its a free "MMO"

Diablo II was awesome. No questions asked.

The actual core gameplay hasn't really changed over the years, but you'd be surprised how much a few added runewords and items can keep players hooked. However, its been like 2 years since Blizzard updated content. There was a ladder reset in June though.....

Srry for D2 lingo : )

Diablo 2? An MMORPG?

Guild Wars isn't an MMORPG. Diablo 2 isn't an MMORPG. Online RPGs =/= MMORPGs. MMORPGs use persistant gameworld servers. Online RPGs are peer to peer.

Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game

50-100k players online at one time, it gets the Ms and The O at least. Don't know about the "RPG" part, never saw a rocket propelled grenade in there. Serisouly though, it has the trading economy and social interaction of an MMO regardless of how persistent it is. Just exchange the lobby for a town and you get Guild Wars.

I still play D2 but none of my friends do and there are SO MANY pkers in hardcore so it's basically impossible to play in public games. I would need a second key to do first drops too :/ if anyone has a second cdkey I can borrow tell me :D

An MMO isn't defined by its economy nor "social interaction". Counter-Strike has 50-100k players online at one time, so I guess that makes it an MMOFPS? It even has its own weapon pricing economy system.

I hate to nitpick, but this guy is right. Diablo 2 is definately not an MMO.

Diablo II is not anywhere NEAR being classified as a MMORPG. It's an online hack and slash rpg.

Yeah, who came up with the term MMO? Isn't everything that's on-line and popular technically an MMO? Massive (check) Multiplayer (check) On-line (check). I think those of us who like to put things in their correct box would rather think of MMOs as only those games where Massive numbers of players play in the same game world together. (i.e. the persistent world argument) Guild Wars is an anomoly though. It's like ALMOST an MMO, but it's not that different from D2 except you trade lobby rooms for towns and outposts. The only Massive part of the multiplayer is these meeting places. That being said, I actually never played D2 on-line at all. It was an addicting game. I always figured the cheating would be rampant on-line. I would have wanted to import my characters that I worked hard at off-line, but that just makes it TOO easy for people to cheat. You would have to do one of those server where your character was stored ON the server, which would mean starting over from scratch. Now-a-days, I'd rather play Guild Wars or WoW than start over from scratch for an on-line D2.

Warning: I'm reviving this thread. http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/diablo-2-still-getting-heavy-play Now I don't know if most of this is made up from botters and spammers and **** but apparently it's up there with Runescape; both in the same range of players. I installed Diablo II recently after 7 years or so, and to be honest it's obviously not anywhere as populated as it was ten years ago, but I was able to find a full game and talkative people. Also, why are people getting so technical over game genre. "M", "Massively"; Diablo has over 50,000 players on the game at one time. I'd say that qualifies as "massive". "M", it's obviously multiplayer. "O", it's obviously online. "RPG", um yeah, of course it's a role-playing game.Numb094

The two are the same thing, it's just that instead of the lobby being a chat room, it got a graphical interface instead.
