I was hoping to try a few adventure games (a la Leisure Suit Larry for example), and was wondering what are some of the must have titles? Keeping in mind I'm running an XP, so I can't play the really, really old school stuff.

DOTT - The Dig - Monkey Island series - Full Throttle

These should keep you busy for a while.

I second the above post. Also, look at the Broken Sword series, it's simply stunning.

Monkey Island (all 4...although the 4th one kinda sucked)
Day of the Tentacle
Sam and Max: Hit the Road
Full Throttle
The Dig
Grim Fandango (S&M, FT, TD, GF and Monkey Island 3 have all just been re-released in Europe + Australia!)
Gabriel Knight trilogy
Myst series
The Neverhood
Kings Quest
Discworld trilogy
Broken Sword quadrilogy
Zork series
...and others.

Also, don't forget to buy the Sam and Max episodes - Episode 4 is one of the funniest/most bizzare games I've played in ages.

*Edit* It's fairly easy to find patches/programs that will allow you to play these on XP - I've got them all running on my PC.

For comedy adventure games you could always try Grim Fandango (though it's not completely old school, as it's semi 3D) If you're looking for a great story you should try The Longest Adventure, one of the best adventure games out there (but you might need a patch to avoid problems in XP). Be aware that there is a game called Dreamfall-The Longest Journey, that's not the game Still Life is also good if you like a more dark story (and this is a fairly new game, so no probs running on XP)... but be warned: It is starforce infected

from the same guys who gave us broken sword is lure of the temptress and beneath a steel sky - both pretty decent games, and i think they're both free legal downloads over at the revolution website

as mentioned, the broken sword games are also great - especially the first two - i think just about everything else worth playing has already been mentioned

unless you want to play dizzy

You can find Kings Quest I & II here (a fan remake): http://www.agdinteractive.com/
Kings Quest III is here: http://www.infamous-adventures.com/kq3/
There are *really old* games. KQ3 is from '86, so don't expect the world here.

All should run on XP.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, even though it's not completely an adventure game, it does follow quite a few formulas. Check out Abe's Oddysee, and Abe's Exoddyss, these are great, and I know I loved them for their witty puzzles.

I agree with this guy.

I would also add Sam and Max Seasons 1 and 2 - don't let age put you off, they're both pretty old school when it comes to gameplay mechanics. And they are both pretty awesome.

you can play the really, really old stuff - king's quest series, space quest series, police quest series, and leisure suit larry series.

and check out sam & max seasons 1 & 2 as well, though i can't vouch for them as of yet, cuz i haven't finished season 1 (and haven't bought season 2).

WTF is up with all the bumps lately. I see ancient threads all the time now.

Oh, did not like ASFM. Did not like him at all.

Yeah, he was a jerk. So was mfsa. Those guys (who were two entirely different people) were such jerks.

There's nothing even vaguely old school about Fahrenheit.

Does it run okay in XP? Or can it be made to run okay in XP? There's a copy on Amazon for a fiver, I'm thinking of grabbing it.

Pretty much any of the Lucasarts games, and some Sierra games.

Also great are The Longest Journey, Sam and Max Season 1-2, Syberia and to a lesser extent, Jack Keane.

i'd have thought so - i've not played it on XP, but if you use backwards compatibility it should be alright
