I have the 1gb 460 GPU and I was just wondering if there was any point in upgrading at the moment? Or if another card like it is going to come out similar (IE mid range and affordable as the 460 was)

My system is as follows:

Corsair 12GB (6x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory For i7 Motherboards

Palit GTX 460 SONIC Platinum 1024MB GDDR5

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 Socket 1366 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Intel i7 930 2.8GHz Socket 1366

850w PSU

Windows 7

Oh and I game on a 1920x1080 monitor

Personally I wouldn't as it's a great card and there would be no need, however I'm one to upgrade only when necessary :P If you want a bit of a performance increase why not try overclocking both the 460 and i7 a bit?

Thanks for the reply!

I OC'd a while ago and then reverted it as my case isn't the coolest and I was BSODing from temperatures hitting 100 degrees C. If I was to get another card I'd probably get a new case at the same time.

Also do you think it would be worthwhile going SLI with another 460 instead? Granted I'd have to get a new case and sort out the cooling but I've been looking at some benchmarks for 460 SLIs and wow, the performance gain is incredible. And a new 460 is only like £110.

Thoughts?

Possibly AMD's 7850 or 7870, they arrive in march.

Get another 460 and SLI. A 460 is pretty cheap now and 2 of them in SLI will perform better than most single cards you could upgrade to for a much cheaper price.

If you have the money and the cooling 460SLI gets GTX 580 performance.

For 1080p it's good, my setup is proof of that.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

As an update:

I've ordered this case and the same brand 460 (I thought that was safer... didn't know if it would make any difference... probably not)

Coolermaster Storm Mid Tower Scout

Let's hope it all goes smoothly with the switch and the temps stay cold enough.

Thanks again everyone, I really do appreciate it.

A GTX 580 would be worth upgrading to if you have the money and can sell yourGTX 460 in my opinion. Some people recommend adding another GTX 460 for SLI but I don't. A GTX 580 performs pretty much the same as 2 GTX 460's SLI but you don't have to deal with the drawbacks of SLI. If you can't afford a GTX 580 then even a GTX 570 is a good upgrade from GTX 460 in my opinion and I'd prefer 1 GTX 570 over 2 GTX 460's SLI. A GTX 570 is a little slower than 2 GTX 460's SLI in games that support SLI but much faster in games that don't support SLI.

Even assuming he can get $100 for his GTX 460 (which I doubt), that's a $400 upgrade. Are you seriously suggesting that a GTX 580 offers $400 worth of additional performance at 1920x1080? An additional GTX 460 would only be around $100, and would rival the GTX 580 in some games, and admittedly not perform quite up to par in others, but it's a quarter of the cost and it's not as if even a single GTX 460 is a slouch in most games at 1080p.

I also recommended the GTX 570, not just the 580. I don't favorSLI'ing low end and mid range cards, but that's just me. In my opinion SLI only makes sense if you already have top of the line or almost top of the line cards. You can finda GTX 570 HDat newegg right now for $330. He is fine with his GTX 460 and a GTX is no slouch as you saidbut he wants better performance. 1GB GTX 460's are usually around $150 brand new, not $100.He could get a GTX 460 cheaper buying one used, but then again he can get a GTX 570 cheaper buying used as well. If he doesn't mind dealing with SLI then adding another GTX 460 is a good choice.

Two 460's are amazing for any 1080p game.
