To bad I'd have to rip the back of my case off to fit one of them in my case.

Yeah, pretty intense considering they were exclusively Nvidia not too long ago.

It isn't if you think about really. It's already been shown that more the 1GB of VRAM is benefiting some games. When you do CrossfireX you need the GPU's to have the same memory contents, so it's 4GB spread to two GPUs, so 2GB VRAM effective.

Wow, I remember 3 years ago when I thought 256mb of VRAM was a lot. 5 years into the future they'll start producing cards with 50 GB of VRAM

That card is well endowed, so it puts my penis to shame. But, it's too big.

Expensive beast. Having 2gb RAM on a 5970 standard was a stupid design anyway. ATI produced the fastest card but decided to skimp on the VRAM. It's really only 1Gb VRAM since it's crossfired.
GTA 4, is held back by the memory limitatons of the stock 5970. This is where 4Gb cards come in handy.
It's not a good sign for Nvidia when one of the largest video card manufacturers say no.

Agreed, that and the 2GB versions of the HD 5870 should be coming out soon too, should see a decent boost from that, and HD 5870 2GB CrossfireX would be pretty killer.

Nah, we are approaching physical limits, not yet, but we will soon, then new architectures yay. Goodbye x86.

this, we are holding on to limitation because thats what the majority is using, x86.

though this is slowly changing, and thus more potential is opened up.

but in the future (if we dont keep killing each other off) we will see cards with way higher vram, hell cards might not even have vram, honestly might not even be cards, just all on one freaking board. (but that wont happen in this current monetary system) it would be too efficient and wouldn't trade the big bucks from account to account near as much!

Video cards with multigigabyte of RAM are great for flight sims. That's more textures that can be loaded in memory especially now with 64-bit Win 7. The only thing missing is 4ghz+ CPUs.

4GB of VRAM...is there anything that would even use half of that amount, much less all of it? That's just a waste of VRAM.

Anyway, a trip I had been planning to Japan recently got cancelled, so that wound up saving me about $4000. Since I was already counting on that money being gone this may be the perfect excuse to make a crossfired HD5970 rig. Then I'll try to add a new a monitor to my setup every month so that within a year I have a 12 monitor setup.

The 5850 and 5870 should've been available with 2 GB of VRAM in the first place. And what's with all the GTX 400 hate? I personally think the 470 is a pretty damn good value considering it's only $50 more than the 5850, a decent bit faster, and has PhsyX and CUDA support which quite a few game support. Only real downside is the power consumption and heat. Had I not already had a 5850, and had to choose between the two, I'd probably would've went with the 470 assuming it fits in my case, as my 5850 barely does lol. Either way I'm pretty happy with what I got, but I have no problem being impressed with the 470 and it's price point. The 480 on the other hand.............lol..............

I do wonder, with all the heat and electricity needed for the new Nvidia cards, I wonder if they might fail early on in their lives.

What i am suprised from this news is that XFX didnt pick Fermi, they have been loyal to Nvidia for long.
