GeForce 9800 GT Green - No External Power Needed

We had revealed about the GeForce 9800 GT Green Edition earlier and now we have gotten more information about this neat card from Nvidia. It seems that this card requires no external power unlike the current 9800 GT card which requires a 6-pin auxiliary power. This is due to the fact that this 9800 GT Green card draws only75W of power compared to 105W currently. The cardcomes with a revised P360 PCB that has 512MB GDDR3 memories clocked at 900MHz. You should be seeing this card on the shelvesby mid of next month.

So is this meant to be just as powerful as the current 9800GT?

Nope, as said in the article, this will be a 9800GT underclocked to 550MHz instead of 600MHz, and the shader clock underclocked from 1500 to 1375.

It will be the crossroads between a 9600GT and 9800GT.

ATI, however, have countered this move by Nvidia by announcing the HD 4750 RV740, which is based on 40nm technology.

http://guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-4750-rv740-review-preview-test/1

Pros:

1. Will be priced at about $100 USD, the same as the 9800GT Green, and a bit higher than the current $90 HD 4830.

2. 40nm will mean less power consumption.

3. Performance is between that of a HD 4830 and HD 4850. This means it will be near the likes of a 9800GTX.

Cons:

1. Requires 6-pin connector.

Loss of performance for "green." Eh, it is a good idea... might be nice for my parents computer which is on 24/7, but I don't see any gamers going for it.

True, i smell ati making a HD4730 to counter the 9800gt green edition, no 6 pin for a 9600gt around performance is winner in any book! :)

Once you get to 512MB VRAM, it becomes very pointless after that. Espically since the 9800GT can't even utilize 1GB VRAM if infact it actually did stand for something
