I would've made more specific answers if I could make more than 5 answers. These games aren't at all exhastive, but they are some of the most popular.
Every Answer contains games that are tied together by something, like style, gameplay, scale, or tactics. I'll get to know what kind of RTS games you like more. But DO post your one most favorite RTS ever!
Total War games do not count because a huge portion of them is turn-based like Civilization.
Here's how they are tied together:
Answer 1: Age of Empires II OR Age of Mythology OR Rise of Nations ORTotal Annihilation OR Supreme Commander (huge scale and complexity)
Answer 2: Any C&C game except for C&C Generals (unique, distinctive design and tactics)
Answer 3: Any RTS by Blizzard (WarCraft II and III, StarCraft) OR C&C Generals OR Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth I/II (unique, distinctive design and tactics)
Answer 4: Company of Heroes OR Sacrifice OR Warhammer 40 000: Dawn of War(3-D, resources are amassed by capturing strategic points, and other similarities)
Answer 5: Any fully 3-D RTS set in space, such as HomeWorld and HomeWorld 2 OR Darwinia OR DEFCON: Everybody Dies (a grand sense of ultimate battle)
