  1. What type of PSU will i need for the following build? My buddy is willing to give me his old CORSAIR Stealthmaster 600w PSU, will this be ok?
  2. Also, what do you think of the build in general?
  3. I already have a good PC Case (Thermaltake Tsunami Dream), 2 dvd drives, and a multi card reader. Also I have an old AUDIGY 2ZS sound card i will be using in this build, can i get your opinions on this?

    THE BUILD
  • RADEON 5870 2gb (upon release): $449.99 (last speculated)
  • Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS 750GB 7200$79.99
  • OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V(assuming i need it)$84.99
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600$79.99
  • ASUS P7P55D LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard$149.99
  • Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor$279.99

TOTAL: $1124.94 + $109.68 (CA sales tax) = $1234.62 + s/h

Also, remember, the price may change depending if i need the PSU or if my friends will suffice.

Thanks for your help!!!

i seriously prohibit you from buying this video card.450$ for a card that support DX11,tell me did you hear of a game that is being developed using DX11? even if there is,then its going to take a while until its released.but a high end ATI/Nvidia card(i prefer nvidia) and then when these next generation cards drop their prices and prove to be worthy in general, you can SLI/Crossfire with a next generation card.this way you will save about 350$ which is definitly worth it.

that i7 920 Nehalem CPU is socket 1366, the motherboard you have picked is socket 1156. You need a i7 860 or 870, or the mid range i5 750 as they are 1156 socket compatible.

PSU I recommend this, good for if you need future upgrades and will power your system superbly.

Here is your CPU Choice for socket 1156. I would recommend the i5 750 or the 860 for that setup.

There are actually 4 games set for release in EARLY 2010 that use dx11.

hmm i was wrong there.but still,i just cant see the urge to buy a 450$ GPU while waiting a 4 months would grant me more options with lower prices, while being able to play games greatly currently.

ASUS P6T SE LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard+ that i7 920 Nehalem CPU

It only supports Crosfire 16x/16x, which is good for you though as your going with that Ati HD 5870 2gb card, Although the 1gb version would suffice, this comes in at the same price as that other mobo, could I go higher price or? i can find a better one.

If you can go higher price by say 60 dollars, buy an Asus P6T deluxe V2 1366 motherboard.

or you can go with my other suggestions.

ok, lets bring up the price 60$ but try and be conservative as well, if possible. I tried sticking to $1200. Also, i would definitely not want anyhting open box, price wise its great but i dont want to worry about missing items or poor performance. This PC needs to last me at least 4 yrs. I appreciate the help! Also i had to change the ram becuase it was not compatible: new ram= G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)$85.99

Well the main differences are that the 1156 socket i7 750 does not support hyper-threading, but have an improved turbo mode, which actually allows it to edge out the i7 920 in many tests, Hyper-threading allows the i7 920 quad core to use 8 processing threads, whereas the i7 860/870 do support HT it uses 4 cores/8 threads, But in the real world this isn't a big loss really, the performance is negligible, there is the odd application that utilizes more threads, but I don't expect you to use many on a day to day basis. The i7 860/870 only supports dual channel memory, i7 920 supports triple channel, triple channel is way higher bandwidths, but if you read through this article here you will see games performance and overall to be neck and neck. The i7 860/870 may run cooler too.

I've edited my post, do not worry. It Does support DDR3 Ram, but only Dual-channel.

I was merely stating there are 2 types of DDR3 memory, Dual-channel and Triple-channel.

CPU/Motherboard/Ram setup:

ASUS P7P55D LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail$149.99

Intel Core i7 860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail$289.99

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)$89.99

EDIT: Triple channel RAM has higher bandwidth read/write than Dual channel, but in games the difference is practically nothing, but in overall system speed, and Video editing etc.. you will notice things going much faster.

The P55 runs a single GPU @ x16, but if you were to go Crossfire ( 2 Video cards linked together using the 2nd PCI-Ex slot) it will change the bandwidths to x8/x8 for each card.

Sorry dude, i suppose i dont understand the differences in memory, then. Care to elaborate? Also, what does it mean when they say the p55 boards only run your GPU at x8 over x16 with x58 boards?

my budget is $1200 including 9.75% sales tax. So roughly $1120.

Also, according to the article it looks as if the hexcores will be better compatible with the 1366 chipsets

lol, CA is referring to California sales tax

Anyways, thanks for the builds BUT, i do not need a case or optical drives or even a PSU if the 600w PSU i mentioned on the original post is fine.

Also, FYI, The radeon 5870 2GB is a REQUIREMENT, thats $449.99 saved strictly for that.

The build in the picture there I submitted just now, go for that but remove the dvd-drive from it, and the case as you already have them. But buy the PSU that's on that build.

That means you can knock off between $140-170 off the price, and its now within your budget. You could even knock the PSU down to the 650w or 750w version to save a further $20-40.

6 core CPUs will use this socket so you'll be able to keep your mobo longer...but the CPU's gonna last pretty long anyway.

The i7 920 is a socket 1366. As of right now Intel will release the Gulftown (referred to as Core i9) cpu's for socket 1366 mobo's only. The i9's are the six core 12 thread processors. If you ever plan on crossfire then you will get the best performance with the i7 920 and an X58 socket 1366 mobo. I do not believe that Intel is going to release any 6 core processors for the P55 mobo's. The P55's are for the i3 (not released yet), i5's, and i7 8xx cpu's. Also, you will want the extra bandwidth you get with triple-channel DDR3 RAM since you do a lot of graphics art and Photoshop.

I don't know. I personally don't think you can go wrong with either an i7 920/X58 or an i7 860/P55 setup. Also, the Core i9 will most likely be extreme editions and will cost a minimum $999. Right now that is what I've heard for the i9 price tag.
