I'll do FPSs and RTSs.
Wolfenstein 3D started the FPS genre. Doom popularized it. Half-Life formed the genre into what it is today.
Dune 2 started the RTS genre. Command and Conquer: Tiberium Dawn popularized it. Starcraft formed the genre into what it is today.
What games do you guys think really introduced and defined a genre. Any genre FPS, RPG, Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi, anything.snowmanman7
MMO=WoW
Adventure=Zelda, Ocarana of time
RTS=Starcraft (Pro) Age of Empires 2 (Casual)

I think the JRPG genre owes a lot to FF7. SynysterFreak
I think the JRPG genre owes a lot to the early Ultima games. :P
FPS - Half Life
RTS - Starcraft
MMO - WoW (even though I hate it, it did set the standard)
Adventure - Mario 64
MMO - Ultima Online (anyone who says WoW is a complete moron) FPS - Far Cry RTS - C&C: Red Alert RPG - tough to say... so many good ones. Probably Ultima.amekhov
WoW is ground breaking sales wise.)

Rofl, talk about calling other people "complete morons".
Wolfenstein 3D started the FPS genre. Doom popularized it.aliblabla2007
Wolfenstein was not the first FPS, that's off by about 20 years.
Doom was definitely the most groundbreaking FPS title. No other title can claim to have such a wide influence in the genre.
I really can't think of single "groundbreaking" games in other genre's, even though I don't play shooters much. :D
Huh?FPS - Half Life
RTS - Starcraft
MMO - WoW (even though I hate it, it did set the standard)
Adventure - Mario 64
Orcishman05
Haven't played Maniac Mansion. Deus ex would probably make the fps/rpg right?FPS - Doom
RTS - Dune 2
MMO - Everquest
RPG - Ultima
TBS - Civilization
TPS : MDK
naval
edit: typo

His statement on WoW stands, and Red Alert is a respectable/debatable answer.

Yep. Without Super Mario 64, there would be no Monkey Island or Sam & Max.
Who 'd a thunk it?

But Far Cry isn't, and even if Red Alert isn't that far off, it's still incorrect.

Half-Life is amazing for a game that was released back in 1998. Was Half-Life the first game to ditch the directional keys on a keyboard and go with WASD? Because that is one of the biggest steps in PC gaming IMO.
Life Simulator: Sims ...this game definatley surpassed any previous 'Life Simulators' (if there were any) and tapped all new sectors of the markets.
Casual/Puzzle: Bejewled ...I'm always surprised at where I find adaptions of the gem swapping mechanic. They put a polished gloss over the simple puzzle games and added modes for speedsters, thinkers and the bored.
Action RPG: Diablo ...most modern action-RPGs seem like refined versions of the original Diablo
Modern RTS: CoH ...the devolopers intentionally focused on removing resource gathering and base building in exchange for more combat time. CoH also introduced smarter individual units, increased the importance of the environment, encouraged movement over turtling among many other things. Yes, some other games had prodding into these improvements, but CoH put them into a single integrated system.
Simulator (prediction): Spore ...nothing quite like Spore has been done before.
FPS: Clearly, it's Quake. First true 3D shooter. Revolutionized multiplayer (large scale multiplayer). The 3D engine allowed players to develop new techniques like rocket jumping, circle strafing, rocket juggling, etc. Its engine was so revolutionary that many other games used it as well (without which engines like UE3 (which is used by everyone today) would have never happened). Started the modding craze.
3rd Person Shooter: Tomb Raider. Lara Croft is more than big boobs!!!
RTS: CLEARLY, it's Dune II. Anyone saying otherwise is stupid. It basically set the standard for RTS; every game since has followed Dune II's formula.
TBS: Civilization. Not as clear-cut a choice as the above three, but still quite an obvious one.
RPG: Ultima III. First party-based RPG. First to set in a huge world. Basically, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn would not have happened had Ultima III not set the standard, and that's enough to convince me.
Action RPG: Diablo. Need I say more?
Adventure: 7th Guest. Why? Not becaue it changed Adventure gaming, but because it was the first CD-ROM game!
Flight Simulation: Either Falcon 3.0 or Red Baron.
Space Simulation: Wing Commander 2. Too bad the genre isn't more popular, but certainly the Wing Commander series is the most influential series, and Wing Commander 2 is generally considerd the best of the bunch.
MMORPG: I'm going to go with World of Warcraft over Everquest or Ultima Online, because all future MMORPGs will be judged by WOW and not by any other game.
Action-Adventure: Alone in the Dark (original). One of the first 3D games. Popularized horror-themed games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil.
Racing: I'm going to go with Test Drive, just because Gran Turismo wouldn't have been without it, and Gran Turismo is about as big as they get in the Racing category.
Sports: Front Page Sports: Football. Without it, Madden wouldn't have been, cuz it basically copied everything that FPS: Football series did (and dramatically changing what the game was like before FPS: Football came out). Not only that, it was the first game that had an extensive career mode, online leagues, and play editor.
And of course The Sims deserves a mention, because it's absolutely unique and created a new genre.

Aaaargh! That's a blasphemy! Guybrush doesn't owe anything to Mario... Maybe the Fetuccini brothers are related to Mario and owe something to him, but definitely neither Guybrush or Sam and Max owe anything to Mario.

Before you call anyone a moron, maybe you should look up "ground breaking" and re-think your list. Far Cry? Red Alert? lmao
