I am currently using this cpu from AMDhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808

I'm looking to upgrade it. My mother board will handle AM3+. CPU will be mainly used for gaming. Any suggestions?

well your cpu is still one of the best that AMD has. Their bulldozer cpus suck but their pile driver cpu's are slightly better. I don't think upgrading to a newer AMD cpu has any benefits for someone in your position. It would be better to hold off upgrading until AMD's next gen cpu's come out and pray to god that its good.

Just overclock your cpu and you will be good to go. A 955 can get to 3,6 ghz usually without even touching the voltage, and 3.8 -4.0 ghz is possible with some tweaking.

Here's a cpu cooler.

Also what is your current gpu?

For gaming? Get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus or 212 Evo and overclock that CPU. All you have to do is up the muliplier and possibly slightly up your CPU voltage in the BIOS. You're not going to get a significant performance upgrade for gaming on that CPU socket.
