I'm looking for a new laptop to replace my PC, and unfortunately I'm not too familiar with laptop technology. My PC has a Sapphire HD 3650 graphics card with an Audigy 2ZS sound card.

My question is simple: What graphics card and sound card do I have to have in my laptop to at least match the technology I have now? I'm mainly asking because I see a lot of laptops with 'Intel 4500' graphics and I have no idea how that compares to an HD3650. I also have no clue about how good the onboard sound is. Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.

onboard sound really hasnt made any strides recently odds are what you have now will be about equal their unless you spring for some uber laptop worth a few 1000.

as for gpu the hd 3650 is officially obsolete.. its a relic there isnt anything in the modenr market that matches it as intel graphics are down enar the geforce fx 5000 series atm, viao is doing its own thing, amd has started a huge buisness with their hd 5000 series discrete gpu's and nvidia has all but given up in the laptop market... currently their best offerings are the 9800m, gtx 260m, gtx 480m (fastest laptop gpu on the planet), and then their 9400m (nvidia ion) whereas ati's are too numerous to bother listing.

if you want to breathe new life into your systemi recommend finidng a nice top heavy cpu ssytem with w/e for a graphics solution and waiting on the MSI GUS. the GUS is the most modern attempt at an external laptop gpu solution support ati gpu's up the hd 5670 (that we are aware of anyway it may go all the way to the hd 5870 for all we know) for a modest price.

Don't talk about something that isn't out yet. You have no idea how it will perform and frankly with the history of external gpu's in the past you probably shouldn't rely on it. 5870 is the best gpu from ati, and is really nice IMHO. A good step down the 260m is also half decent in the sense it will run most games out there. If you type in laptop gpu benchmarks you get a complete and current list of all the ones ranked. Keep in mind mobile gpu's aren't as strong as deskstop equivalents.

I see. So let me then simplify and pose my concerns as multiple questions: 1. So all modern laptops can churn out 5.1 sound? 2. Any graphics in a brand new laptop will be better than a HD3650? 3. So with all those cards listed, which is the best overall bang for the buck? 4. Of all the cards listed, which is the best bang for the buck on the cheap side?

well.. tbh you want the best bang 4 buck laptop in general dont you??

in which case.. 1 question do you mind 16" screens? if not then boy did i hit paydirt for you..

asus ROG 16" laptop with an nvidia gt360m discrete graphics and core i5 2 core cpu with 6gb ram.

the gt360m is about equal to a 9800gt video card. it will handle most any game on medium settings or higher this is a fact. it comes preloaded with windows 7 64-bit and has a backlit keyboard. average retail price of this wonder is about 900 dollars US

For ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650's rank refer to http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-3650.8839.0.html First, one should answer the desired laptop size e.g. 13 inch, 14 inch, 15 inch, 16 inch, 17 inch.

There's no need to wait, refer to ViDock 2 from http://www.villagetronic.com/vidock2/index.html From http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-vidock-experiences.html My DIY ViDock with Sony Vaio VGN-FW45GJ and external Radeon HD 5770 I use PE4H-EC2C adapter. MSI's GUS uses the same ExpressCard slot as ViDock 2/DIY ViDock.

Like GeForce GTS 260M (38 Watts, TSMC 40nm), the GT360M also features 96 CUDA processors (CUDA 1.2/DX10.1 device). Geforce 9800M GT also features 96 CUDA processors (CUDA 1.1 device). GT360M can support DDR3, GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory types. You could say GT360M is just a rename GTS 260M.

Mobility Radeon HD 4570 (80 SPs, 8 ROPs) is lower than or about on par with Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (120 SPs, 4 ROPs).

Need to find a cheap Mobility Radeon HD 4650(320 SP, 8 ROPs) or Geforce GT240/MGT330M(48 CUDA**, 8 ROPs) based laptop. **atleast clock double and dual issue instruction per cycle per CUDA processor i.e. 192 SPs effective.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220715

refurbished asus G60VX-RBBX05

specs:

core 2 duo p7450 2.13ghz, 4gb ddr2, nvidia gtx 260m discrete graphics, 16" screen, windows 7 64-bit, 320gb HDD

price 684.95 before S&H (shipping is a standard 14.83 regardless of where you live)

1yr manufacturer warranty

however you would need to buy a computer bag for it in order to safely transport it around

th cpu is a little slow but should be alright for most games and the graphics chipset is outstanding for the price. my my what a prize :D

Hmm I will definitely consider that. I don't like the 7lb weight, the awful battery, and some of the customer reviews. But again, all that technology for that price seems like a steal.

Hmm so is a graphics card really necessary? What if I do what the first person said and instead of getting a laptop with an ok processor and ok graphics card I get one with a great processor and on board graphics?
