Defrag your harddrive.  Uninstall programs that begin at start up.  Press CTRL + Alt + Delete to see which processes are running.  Track down and uninstall the ones you don't need.  Change to a better Anti-Virus.

In this order: Get a virus scanner - I prefer using Antivir by Avira, but if you have a different preference, go for it. Get a good spyware/malware scanner/cleaner. I use Spybot S&D and Lavasoft's Ad-aware, but again, you can use whatever you see fit. Go through your hard drive and delete old/unused programs and files. Also close any currently running applications you don't need (you should always do this, not just this once). Download and run a program called "CCleaner". The "Cleaner" option will clean out old temporary files on your machine, and then run its "Issues" scan to fix old/dead .dll, ActiveX, and what-have-you files. You can also uninstall programs you don't need with this tool, as well as choose which programs run upon starting up your computer. If you do uninstall files from here though, you should go back and scan for issues again afterwards, as most programs leave behind trace files. Defragment all your hard drives - if you don't know where to find this tool, it's in the Start Menu under "Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools". Restart your system - when it starts up again, you might be surprised at how much quicker your machine runs.
