Surprise no one hasn't made a thread on Intel's i9-9900K, taken from Tom's Hardware news and from the looks of it, it can go up to 5Ghz. I was thinking 6c/12t was going to be a great sweet spot for an all around high-end processor. That Ryzen 2700X is looking good everyday now and I'm considering going Ryzen soon myself.

Oh looks like AMD will be my next CPU purchase... That price for a main stream processor is to high imo.

The 9700K will be priced about 8700K right now.

I wonder if the performance will be higher that Ryzen in gaming.

that is a bit of a circular statement.

nearly by definition a 'hardware enthusiast' is a luxury hobby.

its been that way with cars, with stereos.

in the 80s and 90s for example it would not be unheard of to hear about a $10,000 stereo system

It will be. 8700K beats Ryzen 2700X in gaming. Why wouldn't the 9900K do even better?

I really should add that if you game at a 60Hz monitor, Rysen 2700X is more than enough for 99% of the games out there. If you aim for 120 fps + it is another story.

That's how I look at it. My monitor is a 1440p/60Hz and despite I have experience 144Hz, it's really amazing, but I'm totally fine with staying 60Hz for the most parts and not only that, I been doing a lot of multitasking lately, going with Ryzen 2700X is the more logical choice and plus, benefits more cores for doing live streaming.

It is the same for me, although I am considering saving up for a 200Hz 3440*1440 monitor when they arrive.

Still, a threadripper CPU like 2920X (when it arrives) should be plenty to get 60fps ++ in every game I play. Paring it with some decent 3200MHz++ RAM of course. 2700X should for gaming be even better I think.

I was talking about 9700K compared to the 8700K.

Another thing the price of the 8700K right now is 380$ vs Ryzen 2700X which is only 300$ (amazon.com)

https://www.techspot.com/review/1655-core-i7-8700k-vs-ryzen-7-2700x/ you can clearly see that you gain only on half of the games on 1080p small performance boost in games, when you go up to 2K rez it ain't worth it, not mentioning 4K at all.

You can see on the last page that there's a 9% boost in performance at 1080p compared to the Ryzen 2700X which is fair price, while only 4% boost at 2K and again if 4K was here you'd probably see 0-1% boost in performance, might be even Ryzen 2700X that would gain the performance boost over the 8700K this time.

Does it worth the extra 80$ compared to the Ryzen 2700X? not so much I would say depends on the resolution.

I will buy a Ryzen just for the greater good, even if it costs a few frames.

edit: that retail box tho.

This might be the first time in like six years I do a completely new build. New CPU, new GPU....the CPU will require new memory and a new mobo. Might as well get new hard drives while I am at it :P

Might end up spending close to $2000 on this one, another first for me.

Hoping I can get CPU, memory, and MOBO for ~$1000, then the GPU for <$850. Probably stock RTX 2080.

RIght now I am sitting on a 4790K, Geforce 980, and 16 GB memory. It's time. Want to get into 4K, and I want to do it right :D

I would like to see how the i9-9900k stacks up against a i7-7820k for being $80 more

For me X299 Upgrade, Its $500 for 7820x cpu, $200 for mobo, $318 for 32gb ram = $1017

Z370 Upgrade $399.99 8700k Cpu, $116 Mobo, $318 for 32mb ram = $834

So though not necessary, some manufacturers are releasing Z390 boards.

So say Z390 $580 9900k CPU, $318 for 32mb ram...... already $898

Would Z390 boards carry the same premium as x299 boards? :D

I'm sitting in 4790k, GTX 1080, 32gb ddr3 :( ram.

That thing would be pretty beastly, but it won't be as good as the 9900K for gaming. Gaming is always top priority for me. That is why I don't take steps back in IPC and clock speeds.

The price of that 2990WX is ridiculous and I wouldn't have much use for all those cores. 9900K would meet my gaming needs as well as give me some headroom for background tasks. It would double the performance of my 7700K for production tasks.

I think it is good to support AMD though. They just don't match Intel's gaming performance in all scenarios. :(

You are correct, but I already get some bottlenecks on my 7700K with BF1 multiplayer at high frame rates. So, I don't want to hold back my GPU. I was tempted to get the 8700K before, but I held off because I figured the 8 core equivalent wouldn't be far off. 7700K is still good of course, but I will sell it along with the mobo.

I would like a 2080 Ti as well, but that price is just way too much. 9900K price is more than what I usually pay for a CPU, but it is not super crazy like the 2080 Ti which goes for $1600+ CAD.

Anybody got any recommendations for a Z390 motherboard?

Been looking at this page as a guide, but still undecided...

https://www.anandtech.com/show/13407/intel-z390-motherboard-overview-every-motherboard-analyzed/57

I currently have MSI Z270 Gaming M5 with my 7700K and it has been good. I am thinking MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon may be a similar choice. I am open to any brand as long as it is quality and I can achieve a decent OC on it.

I am leaning towards the Aorus Z390 Pro now....

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z390-AORUS-PRO-rev-10#kf

It has a good VRM solution and all the features I am looking for without anything too crazy. I am not doing custom water cooling and will be using AIO cooler. People complain that Gigabyte BIOS is not as user friendly as the other manufacturers, but I have owned several Gigabyte boards in the past and never had an issue. I also rarely ever go into my BIOS once I have achieved my final OC and fan profiles.

@BassMan: Looks good. Nice to see they are upping it to 12 pins for the CPU power connection. Though that will give problems with some PSUs. I got a couple of different ones. One with 16 pins for CPU, two others with only 8 pins.

I think technically 8 pins is good for 200 or 300W so it shouldn't be a problem anyway though.

That is a good point you bring up and I am very glad you did. I use an old Corsair TX850W PSU. It only has 8 pin (2x 4 pin) and I can't use the PCI-E connectors on the mobo. I will need to buy a new PSU. That sucks. :(

It will work without the extra 4 pin. However it could potentially limit the overclock you can get.

You're welcome. Try to find power consumption on overclocked 8700K. It could give you an idea how much power the 9900K will need.

2700X is a solid CPU without a doubt and a great bang for the buck. However, in the worst case scenarios where the CPU is most likely to be the bottleneck (poor multi-threading, single core focus, etc.), the Intel CPUs provide a noticeable performance boost. That is why I don't mind paying the extra money for the 9900K. That is also the reason why I went with 7700K instead of waiting a few months for the first gen Ryzen with more cores.

@BassMan: which suits me fine. I generally target 72 fps, with the max image quality/resolution my gpu can handle. (Half my monitor’s refresh rate)

At those settings, the 9900K wouldn’t be worth the extra $$.

@horgen: No, I just target 72 with settings. If the fps goes over, I still don’t really see any tearing.
