So I found an old i7 920 laying around and was curious if I should change my 1100t and try my PC build with the I7 920?

Current Build:

AMD Phenom 1100t @ 3.8Ghz OC
8gb Ram
R9 280x

or should I use:

I7 920 @ 4.0Ghz OC
8gb ram
R9 280x

Which would be a better cpu to use for current gaming?

920 is better, especially when OC'd.

If you play games like BF4 that make use of 4+ threads no keep the Phenom X6 now if you play games like MMO's that only use 1-4 cores the 920 will provide a boost over the Phenom.

The intel 920 (even though it came out in 2008) is still a fast CPU, especially when overclocked (intel hasn't made a huge jump in performance from first gen to 4th).

I wouldn't be surprised if an i7 920 at 4ghz is comparable to a stock 4th gen i5 (which are like $180-200).

I think from Sandy and later gens the difference is small, however the difference between first(nehalem???) and second(Sandy) is bigger. Around 20-25% or so.

Do you have a motherboard for the intel?

Also bear in mind that it uses triple channel memory, so 8GB probably won't happen.

An i7 920 is faster than any i5 in multithreaded apps like 3DMark.

A 2500k@4.5Ghz gets ~8000 score but you can break 10k with the 920.
