I will copy and paste my reply from the other thread in the PC forum...

I was in the same situation and went for the Alienware AW3418DW. It is a great monitor.

These guys know their shit and they said it is the best of the bunch....

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_alienware_aw3418dw.htm

You can find it on sale for less than $1000 USD.

@yhyyy: TFTcentral is a well respected site that does serious hardware reviews. They have been around for a long time and are very detailed and cover all aspects. That being said, it is always best to gather information from multiple sources before deciding which monitor is best.

To be honest, I don't watch many movies on my monitor, but I did try some and it was nice not having the letterbox bars on the screen. However, I get this same effect when watching movies on my OLED TV (my main movie screen) in the dark as the pixels turn off for perfect blacks.

Gaming is amazing on the Alienware AW3418DW. The 21:9 aspect ratio definitely adds to the immersion and enjoyment. It overclocks to 120hz (100hz native) with no noticeable ghosting or input lag. Colour reproduction is very good, but the contrast ratio is not as good as VA panels. However, VA panels have poor pixel response, so you get annoying ghosting or smearing of the image. My biggest issue is the IPS glow which is somewhat noticeable in dark scenes when sitting close to it. This is a fault of IPS and not the monitor itself. This is also more of mental thing as it rarely distracts me now that I am no longer analyzing my monitor and am just enjoying it. Backlight bleeding is also better than many of the competing models. Mine has minimal backlight bleed.

The up and coming HDR monitors will be too expensive (around $2000 USD) and only feature HDR10 and not HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. So, they can not do dynamic HDR. You are better off waiting for a fully featured HDR monitor in the future that will be better and cheaper than these first gen ones. While waiting, you can enjoy one of the quality SDR monitors currently available which are much cheaper. That is what I am doing. My monitor puts a smile on my face everyday. :)

I fully recommend the Alienware AW3418DW without hesitation. It is a great monitor and it is the best of the 3440x1440 monitors available today.

Here is mine...

A VA panel the other day I seen had color reproduction that was as good as my 5 year old old IPS, but the pixel response with transitioning from dark areas and crushing blacks was bad and annoying.....

Yeah, every panel type has its flaws and there is no one perfect panel tech. For me, dealing with IPS glow and lower contrast is better than having to deal with the ghosting of VA which is super distracting and immersion breaking. The black crush is less than ideal too. The new HDR panels coming out are also VA. That is another reason to skip them. However, the tech keeps improving and they might be badass VA panels. The full array back lighting and 200hz refresh rate is pretty sexy too.

That price though... hehe :)

I used to have a 31" PC monitor, yes that is true a 31" and what I can tell you is that given how close it is, much is outside your peripheral vision anyway and if you want that kind of 'surround experience' is better (and cheaper) to go VR.

I think 24" is the idea size given how a person ends up focused anyway

@yhyyy:

Yes, the AW3418DW will last you 5 years. It will be compatible with all future GPUs in the next 5 years and there is nothing to worry about. The only thing that the AW3418DW is lacking is HDR. It has a good resolution, good image quality, high refresh rate, G-Sync, low input lag, and no noticeable ghosting.

Technology is always advancing and there is always something better coming out. It is up to each individual to decide when they want to upgrade to something new. I can tell you that this first generation of HDR 3440x1440 monitors will be a waste of money because they will be very expensive and won't have dynamic HDR support. So, there is no point in waiting for them as you will want to upgrade them when the fully featured HDR monitors come out in the future.

So, now is a good time to buy a quality SDR monitor as there is no worthwhile HDR monitor that has been announced for the near future.

yeah actually it is compared to these wide screens.

what I had was a 31" regular screen before the wide screens came out.

might want to watch Linus Tech tips on this issue though, if the game is not built for it, it could end up a worse experience.

@tryit: So far, all the games I have played either support the 21:9 aspect ratio or can be modded to support it. Worst case scenario is that you play at 16:9 with black bars on the sides. In this situation, the size of the image will still be the same as a regular 16:9 monitor.

could be cool.

plus the prices are reasonable. I paid $1800 for that 34" non-wide screen monitor.

my interest is sparked

@yhyyy:

The higher the refresh rate, the better. It means that the monitor is capable of displaying the higher frame rate.

Anything 100hz or higher is very good. Keep in mind that you need a very powerful computer to play games at high frame rates at that resolution.

The contrast ratio on the Alienware is still good, but it is an IPS panel which are usually around 1000:1 contrast ratio. VA panels usually have a contrast ratio of 2000:1 or more. So, you get deeper blacks with the VA.

The AW is a very good monitor. I am very picky about quality and I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't feel it was worth it. I like to buy the best.

@yhyyy: The maximum fps that you can actually see is tied to the monitor's refresh rate. So, if you have a 60hz monitor and can run a game at 100fps, your monitor is only showing 60fps. If you had a 100hz monitor, it would show the full 100fps. So, the higher the resfresh rate, the more you benefit from high fps. Once you get to 100hz and higher, it is harder to tell the difference because it is already very smooth. There is a benefit of going to the really high refresh rates like 200hz, but once you are around 100hz, it already feels good enough for most people. However, going from 60hz to 100/120hz is very noticeable and feels much better.

Your 4770K is still pretty good for delivering high frame rates. It may be a bottleneck on some more complex games when trying to achieve high frame rates. Your GPU will be the biggest factor with the resolution of the monitor. 3440x1440 is demanding.

It will still be good for another 2 years. I think you should consider upgrading your CPU when the new consoles release around 2020/2021. They will be receiving a much needed CPU upgrade and this will increase the requirements for a lot of games as they will become more advanced.

@yhyyy: You will need to change your motherboard and RAM when you change your CPU. You should never buy the motherboard and RAM before deciding on the CPU as the parts may not be compatible. People will be able to help you when the time comes.

Your hard drives are good. I don't pay too much attention to hard drive performance. All I care about is that they are reliable. They are all slow compared to SSD anyway.

Yes, I do believe the Alienware is better than the Acer, but they are both good. Everybody has preferences. I believe the quality control is better with the Alienware. I also prefer the design of it.

I have no interest in speaking with you on Skype. I have already helped you plenty.

@yhyyy:

There will be reviews with benchmarks on September 17 for the RTX 2080 and September 19 for the RTX 2080 Ti. They will go into detail about performance and features and answer a lot of your questions.

Personally, I think ray tracing is not worth it right now as the performance is not there. I think the RTX 2080 Ti is way too expensive and I would not buy it because it is a ripoff.

I think the RTX 2080 would be a good card for you to buy. It should be faster than a GTX 1080 Ti and offer some of the new features. It will be way faster than your GTX 780. It will last you a while and you can always sell it later and put the money towards a future card if you want more performance.

RTX series are a waste of money for the performance you get. RTX 2080 will be on par with GTX 1080ti at best. GTX 1080ti can be found for $650 now while the 2080 will be $800

@yhyyy:

You are entering enthusiast territory with a 3440x1440 high refresh rate monitor. 3440x1440 at Ultra settings is demanding and you will need to upgrade more frequently if you want to keep high frame rates on all games. Either that or expect to be playing at lower frame rates or lowered settings as the years pass.

You still have a GTX 780 which shows that you do not upgrade very often. So, be prepared to spend the money and not so much focusing on how long a GPU will last if you really want to play at 3440x1440 Ultra for a long time.

@yhyyy: RTX 2080 should last you 2 years without much compromise. At that point 3440x1440 Ultra and high frame rates is not going to be realistic for the latest games. There are already games like Ghost Recon: Wildlands that give my GTX 1080 Ti a workout. I have to turn down some settings to maintain a high frame rate. This is a rare case though, and most games are nowhere near as demanding.

will i have bottleneck in 3440x1440 with 100hz monitor panel?? with my 4770K??

someone told me this//?? is it true??

and he told me for to not have bottleneck he told me to buy 8700k

also he told me

as for the cpu, 4770k will do fine at 2560x1440 or 3440x1440 60Hz, but for 100Hz you're gonna want the 8700k, would be a shame to bottleneck such powerhouse of a GPU like 1080ti or 2080. 60 fps to 100 fps is a huge improvement, to me it's on par with 30 fps to 60 fps, though 60 is still very playable to me.

if you're getting 1080ti/2080 and 100hz display now, they you'd better not wait 3 years with upgrading cpu.

you're definitely hampering performance of a 1080ti on a high refresh display in some of them. how much is hard to say, it will vary from game to game. it's worth mentioning that fps is not the only factor, when cpu usage is high you're likely to see stutter. that's why it's worth switching from 4c/8t to 8 physical cores.

all these things he told me is it true?

@yhyyy: I got a 4790K and no bottleneck.

Only thing that could bottleneck at 3440x1440 and 120fps is your graphics card.

It's a difficult situation, It depends what graphics card you have, the 4770K @ 4.5 may hold a 1080Ti back a little, so you may not get 100% performance out of the card but it may well still run your game smooth, then there is the 1080, quite possibly not held back by the CPU, the question at this point you should be asking members is do they think a 1080 will run smooth on the monitor, for me looking at costs versus performance if the answer is yes then personally I would go with the 1080 simply because you are more likely to get 100% out of that card with your CPU...…. does that make sense?

what card do you have>??
