If you want true 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound you will need one.

You can always go for a Creative set (5.1 or 7.1) which you will have to add a decoder to DDTS-100 sells for a $100 I think. On the other hand I bought the Logitech Z5500, the decoder is built in the subwoofer and the quality is nothing short of spectacular.

I picked up a Pioneer one from Bestbuy for 330 after tax.

It came bundled with a receiver and speakers (very rare in the 300 range).

Cruise bestbuy or futureshop (are there even futureshops in the states?) or circuit city. Just keep an eye out.

You could opt for the DVD player + built in amp with speakers. But, the only true 5.1/7.1 would be playback for DVD's. And by true, just so you know.. is the seperation between the back speakers mostly.

1 optical input, the Logitech Z-5450 has 2. You can always get a toslink switch.

Aren't Logitech purely computer surround sound systems? Because in a larger room with an HDTV, computer surround won't be as crisp as "Home theatre" intended surround sound system.

Although, if that doesn't bother you, a logitech system could be less than 100$.

For their cheaper headsets I agree with you, this also applies to Creative sets. The Gigaworks and Megaworks from Creative and the Z-5500 are different monsters. They have THX certification and believe me sound is crisp for movies, games and music.

That is not to say they are perfect out of the box, you need to find your preferred levels for bass, center and surround speakers, once you do there is no going back to mono sound as it were.

then its nice that i can expand it to two optical inputs , and yeah i was afraid of that one about its being pc speakers , but as long as they are somehow expensive then im cool with it , i got ripped off with a 70$ fake 5.1 speakers they was very weak and have no optical or any other sorround outputs only stereo, so im never going to buy any cheap systems again.

It's true that even the best PC speakers can't push enough air to compete with true tower speakers in medium to large size living rooms, but for $300 I've never seen a home theater speaker/receiver kit that could compare with good PC speakers.

Even though the z5500 has one optical input, seeing how the controller is easy access, it would only take a second to swap the cables with the device you want to use, leaving the other just disconnected behind it.

But a switch will probably reduce the wear on the port. This one is cheap enough (works both ways) : http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2946&seq=1&format=2

While yes they are pc speakers, it has built-in dolby digital decoding, which makes it perfect for dvds and gaming. I'm sure they might not be the best option for a large 20*30 living room with a vaulted ceiling, but I'm also sure they'd do just as good or possibly better than most $300 Home theater in a box setups.

I've seen them as chea as $180 now and then too.

This is the best price I've ever seen on it, and still in stock:

http://clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A5147062

$169.99 after two rebats that total $60

I've ordered from Clubit before, they seem good.

I've read they sound great for games and movies, but missing a little in the high end from lacking tweeters.

I'd recommend you head to the HTIB alternatives thread on avsforum and build a decent 2.1 setup :? That's what i'm doing, i was told you need to spend $5-700 for a decent HTIB and with that cash you can piece together a way nicer HT.

now thats a nice price , but what do you mean by lacking of tweeters? does that make a real big diffrince? , by the way about my room its only 15x14.5 ft so it will be a good experience.
