I'm looking into buying a laptop soon and want to be able to play the games that I've had for my XP Pro desktop. I've heard that Microsoft is not going to be supporting XP in the future so I've decided that Vista may be the best way to go. But reading into Vista, it sounds as though not all games are compatible with it. My question is, does it matter what version of Vista you have in order to play games, or is any version good enough. Obviously Vista Ultimate should be able to run games, but do any of the other versions come with that capability or the feature of DX10?

Specifically, if you will, I like playing Counter-Strike: Source, the half-life series, SW: Empire at War, and Warcraft 3 & the Frozen Throne. After answering my question above, it would help me out greatly if one of you could point me in the direction of a list of reliable, compatible games with Vista so that I could compare what I have with what works. Also, does anyone know if Steam works well on Vista?

Personally, I'd rather stick with XP Pro, since I know the OS so much better, but supposedly Microsoft isn't going to be supporting XP much longer; Vista is taking over. So, I'll gladly accept any input as to what you guys think I should get.

Thanks.

Hey other, you might as well go with Vista due to the Microsoft not supporting XP in the future. All Vista packages: Basic, Premium, and Ultimate come with capability with DX10. Lots of games work well with Vista, especially when the Service Package 1 came out for it. Some games are Company of Heroes, CS:S, Orange Box, Vegas, Supreme Commander, and all the games you listed in the second paragraph. Finally, steam works superb with Vista. Hope that helps!

A lot of games work great with Vista. The only real thing you need to worry about are your laptop's specs.

XP will be around for the next year or two but afterwards you'll need Vista so you might as well make the step to Vista now.

Compatibility-wise, just about any XP game works fine on Vista. Most issues are with older DOS/Win95/Win98 games.

or on the other hand you could skip Vista and wait for the next one, which according to some reports is being brought forward in recognition of the fact that Vista's pretty much a a waste of time

i'd seriously think about it if you already have a copy of XP you could legitmately load onto your new machine

no, it's because Microsoft wants to get back into the system they did with 95 and 98 in regards to release dates.

A lot of games work great with Vista. The only real thing you need to worry about are your laptop's specs.GreaterthanG0d

Well, the system I'm looking at is a Dell XPS with the following specs:

Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo T7250 (2MB cache/2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB)

4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)

320GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive

256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT

I'm pretty sure I'd be running Vista Home Premium Edition SP1.

This is a 32-bit system right? I mean these specs can't nearly topple something 64-bit can they?

Also, do you guys know if KOTOR and KOTOR 2 work on Vista?

Thanks so much for all of your input, it's really helping me to make an informed decision. I appreciate it a lot.

Wow! My laptop has almost the same specs, and let me tell you, Vista will run perfectly well on that. I properly recommend Premium for the full "vista experience" ... (You get more visual features that Basic, which is basically XP, with a couple of changes and a new skin..) , however Basic will do ya just fine, and will take up less resources.

Vista is an excellent OS, most people I hear whining about it have never used it.

At that point Windows 7 will be out, so you can safely ignore Vista altogether....
