I bought my desktop computer in 2010. Which, I don't think, is too old. Anyways, I was wondering. If I buy new equipment for it, will it still be compatible?

I have my eye on an EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti and an AMD Phenom II x4 processor.

I'm really new to pc gaming and I am still saving up money for this stuff.

My real question is, will it work with a system that is 2 years old?

Technology is always changing and I would hate to have to buy a brand new motherboard because my current one is "out of date."

Oh yeah, and it's a Dell. I don't know much else, as I don't have my pc right now. I'm using a friend's. Please help!

That I can't tell you, as I don't have my specs on hand. I do know I have an Athlon II processor (2.4 GHz), NVIDIA GeForce 6550 graphics card, 4 GB RAM (DDR2 I believe), 500 GB Hard Drive, and that it was manufactured by Dell in 2010 (It came with Winsows 7). I hope that can help.

Oh, and I have never tinkered with the interior since I've had it, so the interior should have plenty of space.

For us confirm that stuff will be compatible, you need to give us a full spec list, or the model number for the PC (so we can find them ourselves). Chances are your system will be compatible but you'll need a new PSU to power the GPU. Also given it's a Dell, the case probably doesn't have adequate cooling for powerful cards. At the very least, you'll want one exhaust and one intake 120mm fan, if the case does not support that, I would look at getting a new one.

Okay, I've been searching the net for some time trying to find this thing, and I think I finally have. Here is the spec list of the model: http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/hp-pavilion-p6710t-pc/4507-3118_7-34647398.html?tag=mncol;subnav And here is a photo: http://picom.priceindia.in/computer/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/hp-pavilion-desktop-computer.jpg

You sure that's the model? The specs listed on that Cnet page are different to what you previously mentioned. Do you have the receipt/invoice for the PC? That should have the model name.

Darn! It's been a pain for me to even TRY to find this stuff. I know it's discontinued and all, but it's all I can find. Also, it's an HP Pavilion, not a Dell, my bad. I've been trying my best to find it. I tried Amazon to see if they had any listings, but no such luck. I have my receipt, but it's not with me at the moment. All I can tell you is that it's an Hp Pavilion made in 2010. :(

Well report back here when you can find the model name. You can try clicking start and searching for "system information" and in System Information look next to 'System Model', but I don't think that will have the full model name/number (might, though).

All OEM PCs have model numbers on a sticker somewhere outside the PC. Search for that.

To get information about the components, go to:

Start Button-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information

1. Compatibility depends on a few things like similar CPUs for a particular CPU socket, a 16x PCI-E slot, your case is big enough, the power supply (PSU), and the BIOS is updated enough.

2. Assuming the above requirements are met, then yes. Those upgrades you mentioned should work. Some caveats with OEM PCs. They tend to have wimpy PSUs. A GTX 560 Ti needs, at a minimum, a 500w PSU. I assembled my gaming PC back in 2009 and I added the GTX 560 Ti (and a newer PSU) late last year. Of course, mine have standard off the shelf components which guaranteed compatibility.

You can upgrade the CPU without needing to change the motherboard. You def. need a new power supply. I'm not sure how much GPU space you have, but you might be able to fit that card in there. Air flow is bad though. I suggest a new case.

Thanks! Yeah, I'll need to get a new computer table. It's fine now, but if I'm gonna play games, I'll need a lot more air flow space. So that case is a sure thing. And the power supply, YES! I need at least a 500-650W, correct?

500 is fine if you want just a 560ti. The more the better though.

OH wow! Thanks a lot! I was wondering one last thing. Since this case will already have fans do you still recommend me buying a fan specifically for my processor??

Your CPU should already have a fan on it. You can switch out the CPU, add a new coat of thermal paste (your new CPU should have some already on it), and you are done.

But if you really want to, you can add a new cooler. It will make your CPU run cooler. The HP one might be too bare, idk.

I already plan on getting a new CPU. I just figured I might get one because it's 3.4 GHz, instead of 2.4. I mean, would it help performance-wise to get one? I've heard CPUs come with coolers, but only "just" do the job, rather than doing it GREAT.

you will normally get a cooler with it. if on the ad anywhere it says OEM or no fan then it jsut wont. this being said you can get em for cheap. i recommend the coolermaster hyper 212+, 212 evo, or arctic cooling freezer 7 pro (rev 3.0). if you have the height the coolermaster TX3 also isnt bad

and your getting this phenom II x4 arent you?

Just so everyone knows the motherboard in your computer only supports up to 95W processors

so this is the fastest you can get

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113007

and you'd have to buy an aftermarket cooler, which is fine, as the one the cpu comes with suxxxxxxxxx

Ahh, I was planning on getting the 212+ anyways. And I was only asking about the CPU to know it's limits is all. So long as I can play BF3 or Diablo 3 on some decent settings I'll be fine lol.
