I have £120 to £140 pounds for a new Gpu

Wot is the best in that price rang i m in the (uk)

My pc at the mo is

Asus 570 sli deluxe

Amd 64x2 4200. runing at 2.42hz

2gb ddr2 ram 6400 runing at 800mhz kingston

250 Hdd

Sound blaster

xfx geforce 8600gt

To upgrade from an 8600... The next cheapest one is sorta the 8800 GT 512. If you can stretch to around the 170 mark and get a Gainward, XFX or BFG... well. I have an 8800 GT and the only game I cant max out is Crysis. I can run CoD4 in full with 4x aa and 8x AF with no slowdown.

World in conflict, everything up, 4x aa 8x AF.

WoW. Everything again, 8x AA 16x AF 80-140 FPS

Yea if you can stretch to it, the 8800 GT by Gainward, especially the "Golden Sample" version, is rapid. It beats 8800 Ultras in benchmarks.

And like I say, I run CoD4 SP and MP and even in MP when its a small map and everybody is running about ive never once noticed any slowdown even when maxed out. Hand on heart, fantastic card.

Uhhh yes. If you're one of the people with low/mid-range GPUs, then you'd really be able to see how old your card is getting. My X1950Pro is still a very good card (in ye olde days, it was plain sick), but I'm looking forward to an upgrade to a high-end card.

within 1 year is just plain sad. My trusty old 6600GT has kept me gaming for a long time and only recently am I upgrading to a 8800GT, but hey I'm not that picky when it comes to graphics.

He'll see a bigger performance benefit in games by upgrading from an 8600gt to an 8800gt (512mb) than a cpu upgrade...The best he can possibly get on that motherboard is a 3.0ghz chip, he's currently running 2.4ghz.

The 8800GT is literally twice as powerful as the 8600GT.

It is, but since he's got an SLI motherboard, I'd probably give the nod to Nvidia here. I'd probably hold off for the 9600GT though, or find out what exactly is going on with the 8800GS.

Awful price on that 8800GT dude, and that's the 256MB version it isnt quite as good. Scan do that exact card for 117 pounds (excluding delivery) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=708007. They are a fantastic retailer with brilliant customer service (I know, I just returned a bunch of items and they accepted without hastle :P)

If you can pony up 160 quid you can get a 512MB 8800GT, these are basically the best thing you can get for your money at the moment in graphics cards. However, since the CPU is a bit lackluster, you might be wasting money. For around 100 pounds the 256MB ATI 3850 is the best bet (something like http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=707459).

For around 120 you're looking at either the 256MB 8800GT or the 512MB 3850 (I have no idea which is better). For 140 the best for your cash is the 512MB 3870 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=718682).

These cards are all great value! You are getting what you pay for with any of them, though I'm not convinced it's worth paying for anything better than the 3870 for your CPU. I still hold my ground when I say that a GPU upgrade will do far more for you than a CPU upgrade.
