I just purchase the PC game Mafia because I heard that this was one of the greatest PC games of all time. I got it for $3 off Ebay. I installed the game with no problem but I'm unable to run it. Now this game is kinda old it came out in 2002. My rig surpasses the recommended requirements by far but as soon as I try to run the game it crashes. The game recommendation are:

System: PIII 700 or equivalent or processor 800MHZRAM: 128 MB Hard Drive Space: 1800 MB

Graphics: Support directx 8.1 and 128MB graphics card

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My Rig:

HP Pavilion Elite m9300z with TV/PVR

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
AMD Phenom(TM) 9550 quad-core processor (2.2GHz)
Asus M2N68-LA
3GB DDR2-800MHz dual channel SDRAM Plus using 8GB flash drive with Ready Boost
320GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300, DVI-I, VGA adapter, HDMI
LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive

I dont know if this is the case, but some older games have trouble with multicore cpus. There is a program out there that will let you automatically set cpu affinity, might want to check that out, if you cant set affinity before the game crashes that is. It may be some other problem, just an idea. Also being such an old game, Vista may be an issue. Make sure you are running the game as administrator and in xp sp2 compatibility mode.

Did you update the game to version 1.2?

I don't know what your problem is but I can tell you I have played Mafia on my Vista 32-bit machine. Why are you unable to run it? does it crash to desktop? Freeze? Do you get to the main menu? Also did you patch the game and have you updated your graphic drivers?

oh one thing to try for sure is to put it in compatibility mode for XP. If that doesn't work then try Windows 98. To do this you right click on the executable file. go to properties. go to compatibility. select XP from the drop down meu.

As soon as a double click it the window open up and I'll havea blank screen and it looks like it begin to load and the the window will disappear and I'm back at my desktop.

Make sure you've patched the game to version 1.2, i'm fairly sure that the 1.2 patch fixed a problem with the intro movies crashing the game.

It's not multi core processors as someone said, since I have 4 cores and I have no problems running this game. And yes, definitely download the latest patch.

OK the crazy thing is I downloaded the Mafia demo and it runs just fine. I don't have to change the compatibility mode or anything. I also downloaded all the patches for the game and I tried to run the game using every type of compatibility mode but I receive the same results. I don't know how the original game suppose to start but I think I heard a guy mention that the introduction movie at the beginning of the game had issues crashing the game. In the demo version there is no introduction movie at the beginning, the game starts at the main menu. Maybe this is why I'm able to run the demo I'm not sure. Anymore ideas?

you would have to look it up on google but I am sure there is a tag you can add to your exe file to not run the opening movie (example: mafia.exe -nointro) Again I am not sure what the tag is but there will be one if you look.
