Hello there GameSpot community! I am quite frustrated and can't seem to get a good build i want to stick with. My budget is around 1500 and not much more. PURPOSE: Production Studio/Interactive Media/3d Animation/Modeling Programming/Digital Photography/Gaming (only looking forward to Diablo III but would like to be able to play games coming out soon) Music/Video Editing Rich Internet App Development/Agile Development Chatting/writing papers. this is what i got so far, it seems to be a dangerous time to build computers for the future. I am not against completely starting a new build. My Displays: Samsung 32" HDTV 1080P 19 inch LG 1440x900 already good on keyboard and mouse :) Build 1 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131614 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371024 Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129043 HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181 (2) Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226121 (2) What GPU? the only DirectX 11 cards i see are really expensive ATI where is Nvidia? i havent used ATI since there 9800 Radeon, which was a great card. What is a SSD and is it really necessary? $1659.50 without a GPU,opticals. Build 2 (the more complete build, but a DX10 vid card) Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814130434 (was worried about the layout of the board where its sata connection is) CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202 Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820227365 (2) Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811129058 GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814130434 (THIS GPU KEEPS SELLING OUT :() PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16817139011 Opticals: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16827135204 (2) HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16822136320 (2) $1,513.89 Thanks in advance. Nvidia hasn't released any DX 11 cards yet (supposed to be March when they come out). Try seeing what an i7 rig will cost. Preferably an i7 9xx series cpu with an X58 mobo. That would be your best bet for what you are mainly wanting a PC for. SSD's (solid state drive) are similar to a flash card used in cameras except they are hard drives and don't have moving parts. They are much faster than the conventional hdd's (including WD's Velociraptors). However, they are more expensive and usually have smaller storage capacity than normal hdd's.

I didn't go through your specs because I suspect you need to go back to the drawing board and do more research. Don't choose parts because they are "hot" choose for function. You said you wanted to do the following:

PURPOSE: Production Studio/Interactive Media/3d Animation/Modeling
Programming/Digital Photography/Gaming (only looking forward to Diablo III but would like to be able to play games coming out soon)
Music/Video Editing
Rich Internet App Development/Agile Development

Those require a high end machine. I would start with the best CPU I could afford, match the best mobo for it, max out the ram (you don't need the cutting edge gaming ram), then get the best vid card you can afford, then the best monitor (32" seems like overkill, I have a 24" widescreen and it is plenty big) The rest is just stuff.

Do the research and you WILL know what a good computer can do.

Good luck

This is my recommendation for a build.

ASUS DVD Drive x2

Samsung F3 500GB HDD x2 (Don't really know the use of two 500GB's over 1TB unless you're running a RAID setup. If you're just doing it for space, I would recommend the Samsung F3 1TB HDD instead.)

HIS 5850 Video card w/ promo code VGA161302

Windows 7 Operating System

Lian Li Lancool K62 Case w/ OCZ StealthXStream 700W PSU

OCZ DDR3 1600 6GB Memory w/ ASUS P6T Motherboard

OCZ DDR3 1600 6GB Memory w/ i7 920 Processor

Total: 1499.88. With discounts and shipping to postal code '32965': 1510.39

And why are you going for a GTX 260? A 5850 is a far better investment and especially if you are watching movies, working with photoshop amoung many other things :)

Well, the ones I picked are the second revision of the OCZ sticks, and so far the user reviews haven't complained about DOA's yet. It could be too early to tell, but I'm pretty confident about OCZ considering the perfect track record they have with me.

I would NOT go with the above configuration. An i7 is far superior in the above-mentioned "Production Studio/Interactive Media/3d Animation/Modeling", so going for an expensive CF configuration paired with an AM3 processor is plain stupid.

Also, why would you pick two drives? The OP's line of work will very likely require high data redundancy, and a RAID 0 or RAID1 array wouldn't be a very good idea considering it still hold a very high chance of corruption or failure when compared to a single drive. At a minimum, I'd suggest a RAID 3 array for the OP's system, or preferably a RAID6 array if the chosen motherboard supports it.

He can play off the SSD, if its a 30gb+ at least, where he can load a few games at a time and play off it is not like anyone is going to play between `10 games at a time anyways.

hmm Thanks everyone :) I can't decide because i was really set on the i7 to the point of wow i have to have that, i have never done an intel build and only several amd builds. Heres my issue with AMD there damn socket changes has caused me to lose trust in them for longevity, i know they give the best bang for the buck but that comes with the lack of longevity and limited upgrades. this is a difficult choice. paired with the fact i thought Nvidia was the one ahead with graphics cards, i havent had an ati card since the radeon 9800, and i have believed for so many years that ATI had worse software for there cards. However i've had software issues with Nvidia too. haha I am anxious to pull the trigger but just cant get myself to do it yet. In the past i got really screwed over when i went for a AMD socket 754 and then in the fall came PCI Express, and a newer USB. I am trying to avoid getting screwed over by AMD's tendency to change sockets. Sorry =(

AMD is not planning to screw anyone over with any new sockets, as they are planning to release their new hexa-core processors on the exact same socket we have now, which is the AM3 socket at the moment. However, for your needs, I would recommend you stick with an Intel build as they are more powerful when it comes to photo/video editing and all that jazz.
