My uncle brought this router today (Linksys WRT54G2 V1) and im trying to make it work with my current cable modem so we can share the same connection. My modem works when I connect to my computer but once I conect it to the router and back to my computer, it does not work. I tried going to the admin page @ 192.168.1.1 but the connection just times out. This is annoying the hell out of me. What do I do?

Turn off your modem, err reset it? Than plug it to router.

First, check that your LAN or Wireless connection isn't setup with some type of static IP address. In the properties window for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties should be set to automatically obtain IP addresses. Get to the Network Connections window, right click the Local Area Connection(or wireless depending) and select Properties, scroll down the little box until you see "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and double click on it and select Obtain an IP address auto... for both IP and DNS. Then OK out of all the windows. Second, if it is getting an IP address make sure it within 192.168.1.### range. It could also be: 192.168.0.#, 192.168.1.#, 192.168.2.# (just in cast: The routers IP is always your IP but with a 1 as the last number) Start -> Run -> type in "cmd" without quotes then when black window opens type "ipconfig" and use the IP address listed. Third, make sure your modems going to the WAN port and then the machines going to port 1, 2, 3 or 4... your choice.

I just skimmed over killer's post... I would shorten it, if Windows detects an ethernet is plugged in great, just set your settings manually set your ip as 192.168.101 manually by hand. Set dns as 192.168.1.1 It is going to be 192.168.1.1, it's what almost all Linksys default too. Also Killer, ifconfig? He isn't using a unix-based os, ipconfig would be what he needs.

haha, i have 2 linux VM's running atm and working on both. Yes ipconfig. As far as the defaults(192.168.1.1) my WRT54G never did 1.1 it defaulted to 2.1 just before i loaded dd-wrt onto it. My grandparents have WRT54GS and it's defaulted 192.168.0.1 Odd that 3 different results from same manufacturer?

I use windows vista 64 bit and my router is not detected although everything's connected in the right places and everything is on. My modem works when connected to my computer but when I connect to it to the router and the router to my computer, the internet reuses to work.

Maybe I am wrong, easier way to check would just to do a ping sweep with nmap, of course I don't know if there is a Windows port. What do you mean the intenret refuses to work? Post your ipconfig log when you connect to the router.

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 76.117.32.99(Preferred) Set your ip manually to 192.168.1.102, or whatever your router's subnet is, probably 192.168.1.0

If your router's subnet was 192.168.0.0 Then you would set your ip as 192.168.0.102

102 is arbitary it can be anything between 1 and 254

While your modem's configuration page does not work, can you still connect to the internet though? If not, your modem is a goner. I had this happen to me twice with a Linksys WRT310, both the original and the replacement broke within a few hours: no configuration page, firmware restore not available. Their official tech support did not exactly tell me what happened, so I can only assume that the modem somehow was damaged when it lost power at some critical times.
