Its a pretty fun game, but not too many play online as of now, maybe 300-500 ppl. Has a good dedicated community right now though. Its more popular in Europe and as for tournaments, CTF is gaining momentum.
Over all, its a fun game and there is just about always a FFA server with ppl in it. Other than that, q3 is also still going strong because of the free game called Quake Zero, officially gunna be called Quake Live thats coming out sometime this year. Its based off of q3, so thats part of why ppl are playing it again.
For the most part though, q3 is just plain fun, and so there has always been a lot of dedicated ppl playing it. I enjoy both, but as of now im playing more q3.
