This is a demo of Lightpack. It's LED's you put behind your TV/monitor and they produce the same colors shown on your screen. The lighting is even positional. This gives an amazing effect behind the TV/monitor. It's only $100, I think I'm gonna give it a go. Check it out...

@saintsatan

TVs with this in them came out like 12 years ago. My parents have one.

Novelty wears off quickly. Total waste of energy.

12 years ago it probably didn't have as good of lighting and positioning of this one. I think it would be dope for games. Especially ones that are atmospheric or have lots of colors. I ordered it off Amazon for $60. At worst anyone who comes into my room and sees it for the first time will be really impressed and that alone makes it worth it lol.

It is distracting and immersion breaking. The whole point of watching in a dark room is to focus only on the screen.

12 years ago it's exactly the same thing as that. My parents TV does the exact same thing.

But you like to waste money so go for it

:P

I've known about this for awhile. The main advantage isn't necessarily the light show, but it uses the ambient light to trick your eyes to make you think your monitors has better contrast and black levels than it really has.

On the downside, these types of things are a pain to get it set up properly and seems like something that would get annoying fast. Not a fan of the mess of cables coming out of the back of the monitor. I usually don't use my PC with all my lights off so it would pretty much be a waste for me.

Lots of people swear by these things though. Not necessarily the ones that change color with the screen, but having a certain white LED behind the monitor can help with the perception of IQ quite a bit.

@KHAndAnime: @FelipeInside: Yeahhh you can just set it to be ambient white light. I wouldn't use it all the time but I'm sure it would be cool for certain movies and games.

I say get it and let us know how it goes. The one I would see people recommend is this one. Not sure if it's worth the money over the one you're looking at.

They're both the same thing, I've watched videos of both. Also that same one you linked is $99 on their official website. I've heard they have horrid customer service which is why I ordered the other one.

I was planning to build one myself using raspberry pi and strip of addressable LED lights.

However, my main concern is how does it affect eye strain? some people say it lowers eye strain because the wall behind the monitor is lit. From the video above it looked a little annoying when during the trailer it became pitch dark then suddenly lit up a few times.

any thoughts?

I can tell you from experience using a TV at my parents that has the exact same thing (but in 50 inch).

It's annoying and even after watching a TV show you want to turn it off.

@FelipeInside: I actually have a set of rgb leds (usually set to white) behind my monitor because having a backlit wall is much easier on the eyes

I don't game with the lights completely off anyway so I'm not sure how beneficial this is beyond the initial cool factor.

I just have a low light lamp on if I want to game in the dark.

@FelipeInside: me too. But a lit wall behind the monitor helps enormously.

Doesn't it make it worse than a lamp? having a white screen constantly in front of you? (the lamp I have is to the back side of the desk)

The LEDs are mounted to the back of the monitor so it has the same effect.

@FelipeInside: Not sure if it was that long ago because the first time I ever saw this was about 6 years ago (at least in the US). Philips is the company who pioneered this technology and they have new TVs that still have this technology:

https://www.ambilight.philips.com/en-uk

My buddy's roommate had one of these TVs and it was cool for stuff like Planet Earth, but with everything else it was just annoying. (Not ideal for gaming and not ideal for movies where you have to really pay attention).
