Market's are great for generating wealth, try to get a city or two near some precious metals or gems, make sure all your cities are connected to your capitals, sell any excess luxuries you have to other civs. Quite a few tricks early on, later in the game wealth get's a bit easier to manage especially when you can change your cities production to generate wealth.

The primary way to gain wealth is from your cities. The terrain tiles can have food, production, and gold (wealth) on them, and many times more than one. Luxury resource tiles like Silver, Gold, and Gems provide bonus gold when worked, and some of them also add +1 or +2 gold when improved. Normal terrain tiles can be improved with Trading Posts that give +1 gold to the tile. Terrain tiles near rivers also gain +1 gold. One of the technologies you can research boosts Trading Posts by +1 gold in addition to the base +1 for +2 total. So from this info, the ideal city location for wealth would be near a river with lots of Silver, Gold, Gems, and other luxury resources. Then build lots of Trading Posts. (just make sure you have enough food to work all the +gold tiles)

In the city you can build a line of wealth increasing buildings like Market, Bank, Stock Exchange. You can also build a Mint that gives I think +2 gold for each Gold and Gems in the city borders. Some of the buildings have Merchant specialist slots, which give I think give +2 gold. Merchant specialists also give you Merchant Great Person points. So eventually you can get a Great Merchant. If you send it to a city state you get a big chunk of gold (like 300+).

There's also trade routes you can setup between cities. You get extra gold for connecting roads or railroads from your cities to your capital. Usually this extra gold will outweigh the cost of the roads. You can also build Harbors to connect coastal cities. (Harbor needed at both cities)

The last thing is Golden Ages. Surplus happiness goes into a happiness bank. When it gets high enough, a Golden Age starts for your civilization. I don't know if this changed in the patch, but it was +1 gold for every tile that had at least +1 gold. So the more cities you have and the bigger they are, the more gold you will get from a Golden Age. Also Great People can be used up to start a Golden Age. This includes the Great Merchant, but the Great Merchant special ability will give more gold than a Golden Age.
