What version of Windows did the laptop come with, if its old enough there will be a sticker on the laptop somewhere with the Keygen printed on it. Write this down then find an Iso of your operating system(torrent).

Follow the re-install instructions when you boot from that disk and enter you keygen which should be genuine.

@fred1266: My advice is to install from discs because it's possible to download a virus when installing from websites even if they are secure. My own experience.

@fred1266:

What laptop is it? all laptops have a pre-installed recovery partition exactly for this scenario. You just press a key at startup to boot from it and it reinstalls the OS from the HDD, much faster than CD/DVD's, also more convenient.

If you have the original OS installed, there should be a utility to make one set of backup discs which can be used to restore the laptop to factory condition.

There should be a recovery partition present which can also be used to restore the laptop to factory condition via F8 key during the boot process.

Sure you can do it like your grandma did in 1999 or you can hold the 0 key (not the numeric keypad) and turn the laptop on then follow the prompts.

I have an older Toshiba laptop and a Toshiba netbook. Both have Toshiba utilities to restore the machine to its factory state assuming you didn't install a standalone OS. All the files required should be in a separate partition. Once restored, you shouldn't need to reactivate.

No disc required either unless you decided to make disc backups. If you don't know about the restore utility, then you probably didn't make any disc backup.

Nowadays, YOU're the one who have to make disc backups (have blank discs handy).

I don't have a Windows 8 Toshiba. I do have an Win 8.1 ASUS. The factory restore option is under Change PC Settings, Update and Recovery.

For my wife's Toshiba netbook with Win 7 Starter, the utility to create (2) recovery DVDs is in the Start Menu under My Toshiba. Note that you need to have an external USB2 DVD writer (if you don't have an internal one) and a couple of blank discs.

My old Toshiba laptop with Vista came with recovery DVDs already made.

Just do what I said, is it so hard to understand?

The computer will do everything for you, just hold 0 and turn it on.

It restores to its factory state, and it installs all its utility and other junk.
