Headphones have always being touted as being advantageous for online gaming especially strategic shooters. I want to ask everyone's opinion on single player gaming? Remember I am talking about a scenario where you are not restricted as in you have no one else to disturb and can use your speakers at full throttle and you dont have to answer the door bell so you can use headphones as well. Basically I am talking about a perfect scenario not what your own circumstances are when gaming.

I initially was against playing single player games on headphones because I wear glasses and found the comfort tradeoff unnecessary. But ever since I got a sound card with dolby headphone, that just changed it. Initially I was forced to play with headphones during the night time but now I have got addicted to it somewhat. Every little detail and the very light background music can all be heard with a good headphone plus dolby headphone gives a very serious surround through stereo headphones meaning it's not a gimmick at all. Now when I play with speakers the sound just seems so "distant".

The uncomfortable factor is obviously there with headphones, sometimes you just dont want to put a big can on your head. My problem is aggravated due to glasses but I am going to get contact lenses just to improve my experience of playing with headphones and I might just start playing exclusively with headphones then.

I can only hear through 1 ear so I don't hear the benefit of speakers when I am playing. So I prefer a headset since I also spend a lot of time chatting with friends online through Teamspeak.

I find that I prefer headphones over speakers for gaming but prefer speakers for movies. I have a xonar sound card with dolby headphone technology and sennheiser cans and even though they don't produce proper surround sound, I still prefer them over speakers for gaming.

You can hear much more of the sound effects that sometimes get lost using speakers. But to each his own.

I can't just pick one.. as I use both for differnt games,etc..

A game like Condemned or Amnesia I think good headphones are good, but for a game like Crysis or Bad OCMpany2 I like to use my studio speakers.

For atmospheric games I like to use headphones. For more action packed games it depends. Generally I'll use speakers when I'm alone to really feel the rumble of explosions and when other people are in the room I'll use headphones.

Headphones, mostly. Maybe it's because I have crappy speakers (X-540), but there is just so much more detail that can be heard through my 555's.

You should try out some headphones with sub woofer built in. Talk about massive bass.

I started using headphones ever since I realized that if I pay close attention I can detect from where enemies are coming from by their footsteps. Plus the sound is just generally better.

I use headphones for all gaming. Singleplayer or multiplayer (got seperate headsets for PC and consoles). Easier on everyone around me, and better to hear everything, especialy in dialogue heavy games.

Headphones. I'm a little bit of an audiophile, so I just can't stand the quality of the audio coming from speakers that are metres away from my ears. I'm also very particular about my headphones. I'm currently using a pair of AKG, and I used to use a Sennheiser.

That sounds like an issue with speaker placement and quality of speakers. Though headphones are just so easy as the driver is right at your ear.

I like both but I prefer my 5.1 surround speakers sadly the only time I can really use it is when no one is home. I don't really like to wear my headphones for extended periods of time.

I prefer speakers always. The only time I would use headphones is if my parents are in the room and they request it. To me it's just a lot better to actually feel the sound around me, and not have to wear anything over my head.

I prefer headphones over speakers. You can just hear so much more detail with headphones. With speakers you would have to turn the volume up really high to hear the same detail, but then may you disturb other people in your house or even neighbors. I do tend to use speakers when I am expecting interruptions from others, since its annoying putting the headphones on and off to talk to people.

For SP it makes little difference but I tend to use headphones for multiplayer FPSs, namely Quake where you need to hear players walking behind, in front, above or below you.

I don't want to put a desk in front of my sofa to use speakers so I prefer my Sennheiser HD555. I've been fairly impressed with them as they cost 1/5 the price of my stereo speaker pair. Soundstage and bass is really lacking, but I can deal with it.

Currently usiny Razer's Megalodon 7.1 surround headset and love the way they mute the enviroment; I can turn them as loud as I want to without anyone to annoy me, and basically I can hear dialogs very well when the sound is coming straight to my ear (usually I need to turn the volume very high to hear dialogs (using Creative 2.1)

It really depends on the game for me, I have Sennheiser HD280 pro headphones (fanastic for $70) Using a Pod X3 from Line 6 as my soundcard, works suprising awesome.

But I also use the Spherex in 2.1 configuration, as well. (not at the same time of course)

At first when I got the HD280 pros it was lacking in the Bass department, but over time, they have gotten much better, still not excentuating the Bass.. Just enough bass not to distract you from other sounds.

Nope..I can't even feel mine (ATH-AD700)

Most open back headphones (which is what you should be using for home) are very comfortable.

Speakers, earphone(haven't owned headphones in... since cd players) wire is too short, would have to put my chair all the way down and slouch with my face nearly in my keyboard to use. :D

Also hate how headphones feel.

Headphones.

1. I can play at night without waking everyone up.

2. It's easier to hear very low noises (such as an enemy creeping up behind you).

3. They aren't nearly as expensive as a decent sound system.

Speakers for impact and in-the-action feeling. I just don't think headphones can compare( especially if you have a subwoofer). If I want to be competitive though, then my Grado headphones. Positioning is too valuable

You got a point there. I guess I can't speak much from a speaker-user as I only use BOSE 2.1 speakers i bought like 4 years ago haha. I'm saving up for some Swan Speakers, also 2.1. I'm really too restricted to move my 5.1 sony theater system to hook up to my PC for use. My console gaming gets to enjoy that part because it needs it. But from a desktop perspective...2.1 seems to do the trick. I just need better 2.1 speakers, and an amp.

I prefer my Logitech Z-5500 5.1 speaker system for gaming. That big 10" subwoofer really makes ya feel everything (my neighbors in the apartment next door feel it too:twisted: ). As far as positional sound, 5.1 has it in spades.
