alright its just about time to upgrade my hd 4870 512 mb. im thinking of either of these two cards. i know the hd 6870 is fairly new and prob will get better with as driver updates come out. but right now which card is more powerful and which has the better price to performance ratio?

edit: is the gtx 5xx series supposed to release before christmas?

The GTX 460 1gb OC'ed is in the same performance bracket as the 6870. And its cheaper, and Nvidia tends to have the better drivers and game compatibility.

That's not much of an upgrade..just wait for the 6950/6970.

Last I heard in a compilation of benches that the 6850 was on average about 15% faster than a stock 460gtx and a OCed just reached the 6850, not a 6870.

Based on what i've seen (since i'm no expert at all) It varies drastically with the game being played. Most likely you will either see benchmarks of metro 2033 and lost planet 2 where the 460 outmatches it or benchmarks of Just Cause 2 where the 6870 edges out the 460 factory oced but the 6850 is beaten unless overclocked. The ati cards will probably be improving a bit from drivers but at this point they are both great choices.

That's not what I gathered from reading the reviews. What it looked like to me is that a stock GTX 460 1GB is almost dead-even with a 6850, 3 to 5% percent slower on average. The highly overclocked versions of the GTX 460 1GB are on par with GTX 470 and 6870. That's the beauty of GF104.. they almost all overclock like demons.

The most exciting thing about the 6800 series release in my view is the price war that's resulted from it. Now GTX 470 is attainable to many people, and GTX 460 is even more attainable. You really can't go wrong with a 6850, a 6870, or a GTX 460 1GB at this point. The GTX 470 has the most going against it, because of the much higher power consumption and heat. You need a beefier PSU to run it than you do for the other cards.

And out of all those cards, there's only one I can run with my current PSU with no problems. Maybe that's why I'm in love with it.

True but I am expecting 1120 cores to be unlocked at some point. Which would make the 6850 another 9500.

That would be cool.
