Normally I don't post just a rumor. But today we had a bombardment of information from a lot sites that are trustworthy.

And I don't believe in coincidences...

From TechpowerUp:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Core Configuration Revealed

It looks like NVIDIA's GTX 980 Ti launch, which is imminent, won't be a repeat of the GTX 780 Ti, in that it won't be faster than the TITAN product at the time of launch. According to Korean tech publication HWBattle, the GTX 980 Ti will feature fewer CUDA cores than the GeForce GTX TITAN-X, at 2,816. NVIDIA gets that count by disabling 2 of the 24 SMM (streaming multiprocessor Maxwell) units on the GM200 silicon. The texture memory unit (TMU) count will be proportionately lower, at 176 (compared to 192 on the GTX TITAN-X). The ASIC bears the model number GM200-310, according to older reports.

We can't take a call on the ROP count and L3 cache amount. Normally we would deduce that it has a full complement of 96 ROPs, but given that Maxwell allows SKU designers to disable components in a way they previously couldn't, it's possible that the GTX 980 Ti could have a different ROP count than the GTX TITAN-X, just as the GTX 970 has a lower "effective" ROP count at 56, compared to the GTX 980, despite the same memory bus width. We know from other reports, that the GTX 980 Ti will feature 6 GB of memory. The TDP is a very arbitrary number, and 250W shouldn't surprise us. What also wouldn't surprise us is NVIDIA reusing the PCB and NVTTM (NVIDIA Time-to-Market) cooler design from the GTX TITAN-X (and several older SKUs). NVIDIA could allow its AIC (add-in- card) partners to come up with custom board designs from day-one.

ust a quick recap.

  • SKU name: GeForce GTX 980 Ti
  • ASIC: GM200-310, 28 nm
  • 2,816 CUDA cores
  • 176 TMUs
  • Unknown ROP count
  • 384-bit GDDR5 memory interface
  • 6 GB standard memory amount

---

From Guru3D:

Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 Ti Listed at Zauba

Always at Zauba, the GeForce GTX 980 Ti has been spotted in shipping info from Zauba. The shipment manifest pretty much shows what has been speculated.

So we expect that the card has 6Gb and a 384 bit wider bus. Searching for it then is rather easy. The shipment manifest reads the a card to have 6GB GDDR5 and 384 Bit Bus.

---

And from VideoCardz:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti performance benchmarks

I’ve just got off the phone with Jensen. GeForce GTX 980 Ti may actually arrive before Computex.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti to arrive before AMD’s “Fiji”

The GTX 980 Ti reviews should be up before computer expo in Taipei. First review samples were already sent out, and we should be seeing more leaks in the coming days. We have been told that reviews might be posted next week. NVIDIA is allegedly planning a launch of SHIELD TV console on May 28th, so perhaps we will see 980 Ti at the same day?

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti specifications

From what I’ve been told, GeForce GTX 980 Ti should not be as fast as TITAN-X. It is very close though (the difference is likely related to cut-down chip. I asked Jensen if I’m right, and here is his response:

Jensen: As far as I know something was disabled, but our engineers are still figuring out what exactly.

Well, it’s not like someone will notice for few months anyway? But seriously, we will let you know the exact specs of GTX 980 Ti soon.

GeForce GTX980Ti is the newest card to join GeForce 900 series. According to our information GTX 980 Ti is using GM200-310 GPU.

Card is equipped with 6GB GDDR5 memory and 384-bit interface. The base clock is reportedly at the same frequency as TITAN-X, same goes for memory clock (no surprises here).

Update: well, that didn’t take long! Via OCN: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti may actually have 2816 CUDA Cores.

It means GTX 980 Ti GM200-310 has two SMMs (Streaming MultiProcessors Maxwell) disabled (22 active). So half of GPC cluster is gone. We do not know if ROPs are also affected (would NVIDIA risk disabling them like they did with 970?).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Performance

Now, here’s what you were all waiting for. GeForce GTX 980 Ti has a lot of overclocking potential. Out of the box, you can expect TITAN-X experience. The difference between GM200-400 and GM200-310 is only seen in Performance Preset, it’s minimal. At this point it’s impossible to say if 980 Ti and TITANX differ in GPU configurations.

I’ve also included Radeon R9 300 benchmarks, both Hawaii-powered graphics cards. You can clearly see where is AMD aiming with these cards. R9 300 Hawaii XT will compete with GTX 980, while Hawaii PRO will help us forget about GTX 970 fiasco (should we even compare 8GB vs 3.5GB cards?). Also note, GTX 970 in this chart is overclocked, heavily overclocked.

As a bonus, we have first GTX 980 Ti SLI benchmarks. Just note that these are very fresh results. I will update this post if I receive more accurate results from Jensen. WhyCry Out.

Interesting. So that benchmark for a couple months ago isn't too off then. Radeon 390X (or whatever brand AMD uses for Fiji) will be slightly more powerful than a Titan X. But be stuck at 4GB HBM. Rumored $800 to $850 price point.

If Nvidia can get this 980Ti at a $550 to $650 price point, I'll def. buy two of these or maybe three. Need waterblocks for them. Hopefully the Titan X ones will work so I won't have to wait.

My Trifire 7970s have served me more than 3 years and I could possibly go into a 4th. They are awesome cards. Love them <3 but I haven't upgraded much since 2012 and I'm getting that itch.

This is the card I've been waiting for. :D

I got bored of waiting obviously but if I hadn't gone TX then I'd definitely got some ti action.

I am slightly worried about this price section of the market. If this and the "390X" come in at similar price points and performance then it might be the beginning of the end for Radeon. So lets hope the 390x beats 980ti (fanboi hat taken off)

Or cost less and performance is the same.

Shouldn't technically the HBM provide benefits at higher res (although limiting VRAM could be a bigger problem).

HBM isnt going to help the the current performance of gpus over GDDR5. Now once we see gpu's that sport 8gb or more with gpu's that are much faster then yeah. But with games wanting more then 4gb for 1080p or 1440p, with 4k gaming no amount of memory bandwidth will overcome the swapping needed from system ram and harddrive.

For 1440P I can see games pushing 4GB and more, but not at 1080P yet...? And COD Ghosts/AW doesn't count.

There are a handful games that can use 4gb or more at 1080p, and if some uses moderate use of AA will usually pushes the allocation. Future games ether it being highly detailed to poorly coded we will see games at 1080p push 4gb mark with all the bells and whistles on or using moderate AA amounts.

Nah I dont care, yet... (I have a GTX970)

But if they screw-up the specs again and dont say they have disabled the ROP's in the last bank (if they do it again with a Maxwell card), then I'm done with Nvidia.

16242 graphics score only? oO.

I think something is not right.

Imagine that I with less clock (1178) and almost half cores (1664 vs 3072) I got 12305 graphic score.

Also Guru3D with stock clocked TitanX scored 17396:

I am not so sure whats wrong. You said that you are using a modified bios. Maybe here is the problem...

Usually benches aren't accurate until the actual new GPU comes out. It shouldn't matter to you though, you've got two Titan X monsters that will tear though everything.

@Coseniath: You're right.

Something was wrong. I put the stock SC bios back and got this (SLI off)

I'm guessing it was a voltage/heat problem and it was throttling. I did flash the last bios after a few beers so.....

Anyway I'm not setting a good example here.

Honestly I think the most important things about these cards are the things that people are leaving out.. What this will do for the market it self? Will the 390x and/or 980 ti release in a new price range, or will we see it release at the current price of the 980 with every card below it moving down a rung in cost..

Even the Titan X has a higher boost clock, ~85Mhz from base clock, this is only ~76Mhz...? The 980 is ~88, I would have thought this would have slotted in right between with ~86Mhz.

Also, the base clock seems really low, same as a Titan X, and ~115Mhz lower than a 980, thats a lot for GPU's, is it purposely gimped...?

Its just the minimum clock boost they can guarantee. I got boost clock of 227MHz (1178 normal / 1329 guaranteed boost / 1405 actual boost) :P. So it really doesn't matter...

Also. BAD news.

GTX980ti wiil cost $800...

The great news is that we can see aftermarket coolers from day 1 :).

That's still weird then, the minimum boost they can guarantee for a 980 is 115 and its 1/3 less for 980 Ti?

Also the specs are very similar with the Titan X, same 384 bus, same base clock, almost the same boost clock. Sounds like its a Titan X but these are the rejects (bad cards) or its like the AMD Phenom x3 (the Titan X didnt sell enough).

Well boost is something that is affected by cooling. That makes things simple.

GTX980ti and GTX980 have the same reference cooler. GTX980ti has a higher TDP than GTX980 so in the same cooler it will have less boost.

Well the bad thing is that not only the specs are similar to Titan X but the price too :P.

TitanX didn't sell enough? LOL

Sales Of Nvidias GeForce GTX Titan X Exceeding Demand

Demand for Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X is unexpectedly high

But yes, these should be GM200 chips that couldn't have all SMX enabled due to fab yields.

The price is definitely disappointing. Makes it less appealing now.

Yeah. And I don't know why in the hell would sell that high, now that FijiXT (Radeon Fury or w/e) is around the corner...

Didn't the 980 and 970 have higher prices and then Nvidia lowered them when they officially launched? $800 is silly. $700 or below makes a lot more sense. I would not buy it at $800. These prices are getting ridiculous. Nvidia keeps pushing and pushing. You have to draw the line somewhere. I remember when you could get the top GPU for under $500. There were no crazy Titans or 295X2 at $1000+. Prices of lesser cards would drop and the top end card price would stay at $500 or less. Now they just keep increasing prices for the new stuff while keeping the same prices for the old. Consumers are getting raped.

GTX980 and GTX970 never had a price drop since the day they were officially launched.

There was a time when the Nvidia flagship costed below $300.

This was the price of GTX285...

Lets hope we see a repeat and see it launch at $700 which would be the same as the 780 Ti when it launched. $700 is still a lot, but $800 is just Nvidia being greedy fucks.

Please read my previous posts. I was talking about pre-launch prices that were later lowered when it officially launched. I am hoping that is the case again with the 980 Ti. Pre-launch of $800 and then official launch at $700

$800 is £523.21.

Add on to that 20% tax = £627. Then add on UK price gouging. It'll be £650 at least

Sorry I misread.

It would make sense if Nvidia would sent a new price to partners before launch. (something like $699).

Battle Hardware said something about $650...
